  • 2nd succession game- Polytubbies rule!

    Using Thoth's save game.

The Polytubbies were a nomadic people until the great leader, Polytehbon I, decided his feet were too sore to keep wandering about. He decreed this nice open spot by a river would be a swell place to settle down... especially since the people were good farmers and knew how to build roads if they'd ever slow down and take the time.

Now some people said that the land to the north would be better, but Polytehbon shouted, "This is ISTANBUL!!!" and kicked them into a conveniently placed open pit that for some reason those dumb people stood in front of. Others wondered if the city should be called Constantinople and he kicked them in too. This made his feet hurt more, which didn't help his disposition.

After settling down, Polytehbon was able to see further north and thought maybe he should've moved the city. Too late now, but he decided that if an invention called Writing was ever discovered he would change how played out to make himself look better.

Polytehbon I sent out many warriors to survey the lands and meet/threaten nearby small tribes, which gave us a lot of something called "money". One group brought back some weird plants that the wise men said would make our people hardier stock. So Polytehbon decided to shove it down the people's throats (literally). While a lot of people didn't seem to like that approach, they did wind up stronger.

One small tribe was smart. In exchange for our warriors not bashing in their skulls, they taught us neat stuff.

We ran into some other BIG tribes. They were far away and too big to bully, so we left them alone. They passed along news about the demise of a far off big tribe.

The fall of a big tribe plus the lack of any good metals worried Polytehbon. He re-focused on military tech to stave off any uprisings by the tribes that they had pillaged earlier.

Some people felt it was time to move away from the capital. Polytehbon encouraged some to go south in order to get the horses so they could finally make those chariot armies his warriors had seen other big tribes utilize. After a while, a bright smith figured out how to mold a strong metal for his purposes. Unfortunately the closest deposit of such metal was far to the south. However Polytehbon said is was his main priority to secure this metal for the fledgling empire, so after getting the horsies and building a port city to the north, troops were sent to hold the land around the metal called Iron.

At the last, the land near the iron is settled. The land in the empire is very flat... not much grassland. On the periphery of the empire are many nice resources, so expansion is still #1!

Looks decent Theben. I'm curious as to why you didn't open with a worker? There is a 3 hammer tile available with the forested plains hill to give us 4 for the expansive bonus. Istanbul can build a worker on turn 18 to start improving the corn and sheep.

I should wait until a bit later in the roster, I've got spoiler info from playing the 1st 100 turns differently than Theben did.

Go ahead and play, don't worry about messing things up, just give it your best shot. If you're unsure about what to do at any point, you could always post an interim save and ask the rest of the group for advice.

It was his warriors that got him animal husbandry, so working the sheep would not have been possible with a worker first run...

It would have been possible if he'd researched AH as either the first or second (after Hunting) tech. Working improved food specials >>>> the ability to chop.

True that, but he didnt go that route and gots it for free. just sayin it worked out for him. I always do a worker first myself and food techs are priority. He did it differently than i would have but it's not like he did it wrong. He was just prioritizing metals so he could know where to place future cities.

Also with warriors first, you have the option to snag workers if you find anyone close enough to you. not requiring you delay the growth of your own cap.

I also like to chop out a second worker soon after the 1st, which I did.

tubbius maximus assumed control of the throne, declaring that an immense monument was to be built, and that the polytubbies would search all corners of the continent. (began construction of Stonehenge, and researching Masonry)

soon after, a small settlement of rabble was discovered to the east. much debate ensued as to whether we should bring them back into our fold, or just wipe them out.

tubbius maximus receives disturbing news from an advance scout: the large tribe that calls themselves the Aztec has many herds of great beasts in their lands, similar to the ones we have in our southern lands. a great worry washes over him if the Aztecs can learn to harness these beasts for war before the polytubbies can.

tubbius was relieved to find out that the dutch fell prey to brigandry and barbarism, and had not been conquered by a more organized tribe. he immediately ordered several regiments of swordsmen raised to heel the rabble on the eastern frontier.

while waiting for the regiments to be raised, a visitor from india arrived in istanbul preaching a message of brotherly love. seeing what a calming effect his words had on the populace, he converted to this following of Judaism to maximize its effectiveness. soon enough, the soldiers were ready, and marched first to the city-state of Burgundian. great heroes were made, and they soon marched to Ghuzz, conquering the city-state, before turning their eyes to the hive of scum and villainy known as Amsterdam.

with the eastern frontier being secured, tubbius looked to the curious subcontinent to the southwest, and debated the wisdom of setting so close to neighbors.

I wasn't born with enough middle fingers.

Wow, I didn't realize how close some of our neighbors were. And is Amsterdam the location of the Buddhist holy city?

Conquering Chicago looks to be a good spot to block further American expansion, while this map actually would benefit from some well-placed forts to the west.

Also I'm guessing you didn't get any wonders.

just stonehenge, unfortunately. i was beat out for the wall, and just about everything else i tried for. the good news is that we've plenty of room to expand to the east, and possibly on the subcontinent.

Yeah, with the setup available + not being PHIL or IND I didn't bother with wonders. I was planning to settle near the marble for future wonders, tho. Also since no raging barbs the Wall wasn't high priority.

Having 7 cities + CoL + being Organized= pretty good setup. I think you did alright.

                          Looks good SB.

I'm amazed at the difference the RNG made between the start I played and the one Theben/SB played. When I played, Asoka founded Buddhism (Judaism was founded in the Americas) and the Vedic Aryans didn't show up until 2700ish BC and when they did they captured Washington (a few turns after George founded New York). The map played out very differently with a crippled America and the Dutch still in the game.

my intention was to found Confucianism and spread it like the clap. i was beaten by one turn. once we start to fill in i figured having as many fat crosses would be better than not, and/or spending the time and resources to build monuments. the +1 culture would still be a boon overall. knowing that there was a single choke point between us and the americans also led to stonehenge.

with the dutch being overrun by barbarians, we're in a very good position, as we have several nice choke points to handle our rivals, so i spent my time building a modest force to handle the barbarians and consolidated our position.
