tried to install civ iv on my new laptop and got an error message about some conflict, presumably with the o.s. anyway, i can't seem to run the game. does anyone know of this issue and possibly any fix for it? thanks..

I've never heard of it and it runs fine in Vista for me. Did you run it as administrator or a user with the proper access? Also do you have 32 or 64 bit Vista? Exactly what is the error code it gives you? We can't exactly help without more information.

i get a message from the 'program compatibility assistant'. it says: "This program has known compatibility issues. Check online to see if solutions are available from the Microsoft website... Civilzation 4 has a known compatibility issue with this version of Windows and might not run as expected."

when i click the 'check online for solutions button' i get a message saying no solutions are known. if i click run it tells me it can't find the cd, even though it's in the dvd drive.

i'm running windows vista home premium with service pack 1.

Hmm, I'm running the same with service pack 2 and it is running fine so since Windows updater is free why not try to update to service pack 2 and see if that helps. Make sure to completely uninstall Civ4 before that, reboot, then update to service pack 2 and try to install.

i think my problem is i've got an older version of the game. i installed the patches on the firaxis website and that didn't work so i'll try you're idea next and then re-install the patches to see if that works. thanks.

Do a complete reinstall of the game from the CD.

ok, i uninstalled civ4, installed service pack 2, re-started, re-installed civ4, and re-installed the 2 patches. now i get an 'unable to locate component' message that says 'this application has failed to start because D3DX9_32.DLL was not found. re-installing the application may fix this problem.' i think i'm doomed...

                You need to update directx9c.

i updated directx 9 off the microsoft website but now i'm back to being told to put in the correct disk, even though disk2 'play' is in the dvd drive.
