What's the penalty for defying an AP resolution? I know you do it in the vote with a No/Never vote. Does the penalty just affect my cities of that religion? Is there any way to jettison a religion in a given city? I think CtoP had an Inquisitor or somesuch. I know it has been suggested here as well. But what can we do now? I am not "returning the city," so is there something else?

Penalty for Defying AP

As noted elsewhere, I am just giving diplo and vassals a try. So far, both suck. Vassals is as bad as I remember. Diplo victory conditions are broken because winning either is too simple (broken implementation) or too hard (all THIS for a vote). Generally, I don't like most politicians. Even the military victories are nerfed. Conquest from an all vassaled world only sounds reasonable if you don't know world history.
However, all that aside, does anyone know the answer to the OP questions? No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai

Does the penalty increase or decrease over time, last forever, etc.? As you see, the first time a weak but really, really nice civ won a diplo on me, I haven't bothered with the process. But now that it is on for a few games, I'm going to check it out.
In Civ III, I seldom saw an irritating resolution giving back cities pass, if it would trigger war with a large power. And I was always a large power. (Anyway, that corruption model made game play deteriorate over time no matter how successful you were.)No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai

IIRC, the cities with the religion get 5 unhappiness, the world thinks you're a villain. They go away if you vote for any subsequent resolution, otherwise they penalty stays.Rule 37: "There is no 'overkill'. There is only 'open fire' and 'I need to reload'."

5 unhappiness in all cities that have AP religion and you lose the +2 hammer bonus from all AP religion buildings until you vote yes to another vote. The unhappiness fades away gradually, faster in cities that have many other religions. There's no way to jettison religions.
City return vote can only happen a foreign culture in the city is more dominant than your own. Sometimes (= early game) you can make this threat disappear by building culture buildings pretty fast in that city. It's a lowercase L, not an uppercase I.

I've had that happen almost before the city came out of revolt so it's tough to get many culture buildings in. But of course it didn't take many of these messages before I just disabled the dip victory condition. If they want the city bad enough, they can come and ******* take it.It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

"From my cold dead hand, by Jupiter!" continues rah's expression. Actually I defied the city return vote, and a third party did come and take it. Despite that, I still have the unhappiness in my cities about the defiance. The happiness effect is not really an issue as I always have lots of happiness per city to overcome the newly conquered wimps that cry about their precious homeland, but I do miss the hammers. No matter where you go, there you are. - Buckaroo Banzai
