Try the other disk. If I recall the disk labeled install was actually the play disk.

Save yourself the trouble, and get a better game out of the deal, by going out and getting BtS. Your problems will be solved and you'll see a major improvement in your game.

But don't you need a working version of Vanilla for BTS to work

But it's the disc itself that's not being recognized, not that the game isn't working. By using the BtS disc instead he would probably be able to get around the problem.

Which begs the question, sofien are you using original discs and not copied ones?

Another option is that the copy protection on the disc just doesn't like your disc drive. I believe Civ uses SecureROM, which has been known to not work properly with some drives. There's was probably some update to the SecureROM installation with the patch and maybe it now doesn't like your drive.

Yes I'm using a legitimate disc bought from CompUSA. I played the game before back in 2007 but have not played it since then. the drive does recognize the disc when I install it but once it's installed and a hit play it says loading but few seconds later it says that I'm using the wrong CD. Another question when I install the game it says that it's uncompatible with my Vista, how can I fix that? I forgot what I had to do 2 years ago. Do i have to download patch 1.64? Also is BtS a only download game or can you get it from a game store too.

While you can buy it at a store... the download version is better. Same price, and you don't need the disc to play. I've pretty much stopped buying games in stores. If I have a problem, I just contact Direct2Drive, and they give me another download. I've bought new computers, and have not had any problems getting more downloads.

I seem to remember that some of the vanilla package versions had the CDs labeled wrong. In other words, when it prompts you for disc 1 put in disc 2 and see what happens.

                          He tried that, Wodan...

Frankly, i have no idea, what´s going wrong there, but regardless, i would also recommend buying ´Beyond the Sword´. It is avaiable in stores on discs. For purposes of error-analysis (to determine if it´s really your disc, that´s broken), you might also want to check other alternatives - but please do not ask or post anything about those on Apolyton.

His disc is fine if he can load the game to his hard drive with it. Possibly, his problem is with Vista. Snoopy had advice on this on another thread. Besides the obvious advice not to buy Vista.

                              That's not universally true.

Agreed. Though, I've heard the newer versions have overcome a lot of the initial madness.
