  • Tech Trading

After reading much discussion, and then trying some options, tech trading seems to be one of those options that can make a huge difference.

It almost seems like no brokering is required as a minimum to move to the upper levels, at least from the discussion here.

So, what option do you generally use?

If you allow trading or brokering, it helps if you're as good or better at it than the AI.

If you aren't, or if you don't bother, then yes, I would agree you probably need to turn it off to do well on upper levels. The AI trades techs around like the clap.

I usually play with no tech trading. While I can trade with the best of them, it really comes down to luck in the early game on who you are near. If you are isolated at the start, or have only a bad tech civ near you, the game could be over before you even have a chance to meet more civs. Plus, it's just another thing civs can demand from you

I don't mind trading only the techs you research yourself.
At the level I play (Emperor) full trading gives the AI another potential advantage over me.

The main reason I use No Tech Brokering is that it allows me to give aid to allies and vassals, without their spreading the tech to my enemies. Though I have been known to take advantage of it and sell a tech to everybody (who has anything to give me for it).

Full trade always. I figure if a civ is bright enough to comprehend a tech, they're bright enough to trade it.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Problems develop when the first civ you trade a tech to becomes a competitor for trading to other civs. Thus I use "No tech brokering" which was what I took the middle option in the poll to be. Without this restriction trading with such tech whores as Mali means your techs will rapidly come back to bite you.

Can you select no tech brokering and aggressive AI from the standard process of game starting? I always go custom game to select these plus raging barbs, choose religions, and to undo diplo victory as an option.

If you mean the Play Now option, then no. It's only available in a Custom game.
