  • Civ 4 computer crash and patch

One day my computer crashed so I pushed f10 which fixed the problem but it erases my registry entries. Civ 4 runs without reinstalling but patch 3.13 has a load bug. civ 4 reinstalled fine but beyond the sword setup crashes everytime it looks for a patch
I would like a hot patch that fixes this kind of stuff like registry entries and updates to 3.17. Beyond the sword is still physically on the hard disk so a patch that fixes the registry issues is all I need. I know its possible cause I have had other programs that have been fixed. Also one that won't corrupt the data for now I will stick with 3.13 with its 1.5 meg load crash. right I am pretty much going after scenarios not the main game
Final frontier is better than gal Civ2
    1. It don't take like an eternity to load
    2. It don't crash all of a sudden except on loading
    3. The unit method with promotions is easier than the parts method.

One cool thing about Gal civ though is its ability to build buildings and units at the same time

Well, i dunno about F10 deleting registry entries, but whatver you say, buddy (what exactly does it do?).

So what are you asking for exactly - the BTS patch 3.17 as downloadable file outside the game´s setup or auto-patching? That is definetaly avaiable somewhere. A google search should find it. I dunno what it does to the registry though. You cant seriously expect anybody to do a hotfix for manually f***** up regirstry entries, though, now, can you? You seriously werent supposed to mess with that. In worst case, you will have to reinstall windows in order to be able to reinstall Civ properly, i assume.

But others will be able to help you better than I (edited) do...

There's no way. Allowing registry entries to be deleted by a simple keystroke would be a recipe for disaster in an OS. If they're screwed up then it's because of system failure, in which case it would probably be a good idea to reinstall the entire Windows OS and rebuild your system.

I´ll jump the chance to bring up an idea i just had:

Anyone remember the ´good old´ DOS days, where you could make a boot-menu and load the systems config after that (6.22)? I mean in most games, you dont do multitasking anyways (at least i wouldnt even try to switch from say FO3 to my desktop without shutting down the game first). So why not have sophisticated games have their own kind of OS coming with them and have them install in an extra partition each (disc space isnt an issue these days - just make the partition a couple of gigs bigger than needed for patches, mods and saves). The result could be tailor-made ´OS´s for each game, giving a better performance mayhaps and if you screw one up (like in this example), you wouldnt hurt anything else, but just needed to delete the partition and re-install. And you´d boot right into what you want to play (or standard windows if you want to work, surf or enjoy media or smaller games), without having to boot windows and all the little extra progs with it... Your PC would have true ´plug and play´ that way, working like a console in some regards... I loved how i could do that back in the days. Had a CD-player in the boot menu. Without turning on the screen, i could have it play with like 3 or 4 keystrokes (>one up, enter, one right, enter< i think it was) within like 5 secs at most after turning the comp on. The seperate partitions wouldnt even be needed for that, but they would keep things nice and clean (for my taste at least). With DOS 6.22 my 486´er was faster than anything else since in terms of getting the program i wanted on screen and the system config always the best one possible on the system for that particular program (which i had to test, and then program, first, of course). And on quitting the program, a menu showed up, listing all the programs installed and ready to run under this config - another keystroke and voilà, the other program was on. Alt-tabbing is a hazzle compared to that.

I figure the main reason that it wont happen, is the effort for the software houses to just do that. But it would be nice, wouldnt it?

no it was the reinstall windows and the windows crashed that screwed up my registry I have had other programs that simply could be fixed by an update which fixed their registries
