  • Civ 4: Beyond the Sword; Civ 4 must correct submarine functions as in Civ 3

    Greetings,

A logical question for the actual world we live. The question pertains to Civ 4; Beyond the Sword. Can a U-boat or diesel submarine (as in Civ 4) carry 3 nuclear ballistic missiles; while, the attack submarine being an Ohio Class Nuclear Ballistic submarine in design carry missionaries or non-nuclear missiles? This is not logical. We need to apply the right conditions to actual reality. The U.S. Navy has approximately 18 Ohio Class Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarines each carrying 24 Trident missiles each missile with 8 warheads. Obviously the Ohio Class Submarines do not have the shape of U-boats. In World War II, the U.S. had the U-boat (diesel) or attack submarine with the counterpart to the German U-boat. However, the U-boat or submarine (Civ 4; Beyond the Sword) carries 3 nuclear missiles! This is not correct. The software correction must be made in order to switch their missions as in Civ 3. I am not suggesting enabling the attack sub (Ohio Class sub) with 24 nuclear missiles but only 3. Has anybody suggested this conclusion to the software engineers?

    Best regards,

    SSBN

I already fixed this in the Wolfshanze Mod (see sig line)... there are THREE sub-classes in Civ4 BtS...

    1) Diesel-electric Sub (Combustion + Electricity) Does not carry missiles

    2) Attack Sub (Fission + Rocketry) modern nuclear attack sub

    3) Boomer Sub (Fission + Rocketry) modern nuclear missile-carrying sub
Wolfshanze Mod: for BtS... adds "flavored Civs", coal-fired navies, WWI units, plus Poland, Austria & Vietnam to Civ4!

Diesel subs could be retrofitted to carry single warhead tactical nukes. Not sure why a major power would do that but it's possible. Some modern US subs carry cruise missiles in addition to their other ordnance. Cruise missiles fit the profile of Civ's tactical missiles and can have conventional or nuclear warheads. IIRC, an Argentine submarine did major damage to the bridge of a Brit ship with an Exocet (a French-produced cruise missle). Not likely to be any Nuke subs in Argentina.

Anything that can fire a nuclear missle can also fire a conventional missle.

Besides, it's a game. It doesn't have to have any relation to reality. The Submarine is merely a representation, it's not supposed to be any particular type of sub that exists in the real world.

            The previous answer is better.

About all I play is the Wolfshanze mod. It's an improvement on vanilla BtS in almost every way.

              We're lucky to have Wolfshanze.

Note that Ohio class subs are boomers, not attack subs. Attack submarines are so tagged because they can hunt and kill other subs. In general, such subs might have nuclear torpedoes, but not missiles. Again, if they carry cruise missiles, and many do, then they could have nuke warheads on some of them.
