Culture wins are also very easy, as long as you can keep the AI off your back. But you also have to pay attention to see if the AI is trying to pull one on you.
I can see that now, I just lost with 13 turns to go to a culture victory. I used to hate losing to a diplo victory in Master of Orion. I used to sweat out the votes until I could block them. In MOO you could actually get an AI opponent to side with you. I still like to fire that game up once in a while, after all these years.

You have to pay attention to the "victory conditions screen". You can see if somebody is getting close to having three cities cross the culture victory point. If I see some civ giving it a run, I make sure to raze or take one of the three cities

And yeah, I used to love MOO. Unlike you, I haven't fired up a game in ages, but I still remember it fondly.

MOO was good, follow-ons not so good. Firaxis + predecessors are batting .750 (I, II, IV). Pretty good in the world of reasonably high-selling games.

MoO 3 rates as one of the biggest dissapointments of my life, closely followed by star control 3 and civ 3.

(ive led a really good life)

Yeah... MOO 3 was a MAJOR disappointment. I was looking forward to that one as much as I was for Civ 3, which also sucked.

Maybe I should learn to NEVER buy any game with a 3 in it

I read some reviews of MOO 3 and didn't buy it. Sounds like it was a good move.

Great idea, I rarely go to this screen, and never notice they had that info. Very useful.

I leave all the victory conditions in. It allows me flexibility, and particularly at the level I play, it gives the AI more of a chance to pull a rabbit out of the hat.

                  Surprises are good!

Ah well, you have gotten answers and it does not matter if they came from me.

MOO2 I enjoyed, but I remember MOO fondly. In particular there was some bug that allowed AI fleets to obtain 36,000 of a type of warship late in the game. In one game I able to see 2 enemy fleets approaching a system and each force had 6 groups of 36,000 ships each! Watching with my scanners, in the end 1 side "won" with less than 3,000 ships remaining. Talk about a bloodbath!

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Hmmm ... I got to this old thread searching the forum for "we love conditions" (needed a refresher on the conditions for having a city love me). I don't know why the search turned up this thread, but I read it nonethe less and felt solmething is missing :
There are, in BtS, 2 very different ways for diplomatic victories : the Apostolic palace vote and the UN vote (only the UN existed in Civ IV vanilla I think, there was no AP as far as I remember).
I guess LordBiff is having elections at an era before mass media and the UN, the elections are triggered by the AP, not the UN.
So he's not on the "ballet" (i.e. ballot) because most likely NONE of his cities has the AP religion. This is regardless of the populations - he could have as much population as he likes, if none of his cities have the AP religion, then he won't be able to compete in the election. The UN regards the population only, but to be on the AP elections ballot you also need to share the "right" religion (state religion of the AI civ that completed the AP).
Is this answering LordBiff's question ?

Sorinache, good thinking. As to the answer, only LordBiff would know. Or maybe his nephew, BrotherBiff? Note that everyone does not have to have Mass Media for the UN to be built. So some civs could find that tech after the Wonder was already in place.
