Hey, vassalage is way cool, and it should never be turned off! It's blasphemy!
I don't like vassalage either, and usually play with it turned off. Too many times I've had an opponent on the ropes, only to have them become vassals to another AI.
And indeed there will be time To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". t s eliot

That's logical. They want protection. Good thinking on their part

Vassalage adds more depth to the game. Why would you want to turn off something that adds depth (and realism) to the game?
Having a country ask someone for help as you beat the snot out of em is great! Especially when it's one of yer bestest buds (ZARA!).
For those who turn of vassals, you are missing one of the best improvements of the game.
Especially on a 'pangea' map, vassals make great buffer zones from the rest of the world...

Yes, Sitting Bull provided me with my lesson of it don't matter how friendly they are if you leave a weak border.
I to was fighting a war with him at his insistance, just a few turns prior. Even at +17, he declared when I moved a few units out of my cap, (that was on the border with him) to support his attack against another civ. Granted this is something a human player would do in a second. But it was still annoying and a reminder never to rely on how happy they are with you.
Now I don't feel quite as bad when I turn on my game long friend to finish off the game

on this note; i have found Catherine to be the most dependable friend
Catherine makes a lot of demands. If you give in to them all, she is very dependable. However, you will end up with worse relations on average with more of the other nations.

If she demands that you give her some horses, don't ever ask what for.

Depends. When I'm not going military in the early ages, I don't care much if they spend their energy on military techs. So in fact I don't mind em trading iron or a good tech for something useful. I'll never trade copper though.
or oil. Nobody ever asks for that.

Rah, I think felch was referring to the urban legend involving catherin's death, not the cossacks.
At least... thats how I read it...
Considering that I had multiple Russian history classes in College, I'm surprised that I didn't connect the dots on that one.
