  • When to use Environmentalism Civic?

It is useful for growing big cities, but most of the time State Property, Free Market or even Mercantilism can give a much better benefit in terms of commerce. Also, the extra corporation maintenance makes Environmentalism even more unattractive. When is it worth it to use Environmentalism?

When you've built a lot of coal plants, factories, industrial parks, airports, and other pollution causing buildings. Your is 5-8 points over your in almost every city.

    That's when.

I don't think I've ever used Environmentalism. State Property is what I usually stay in once I get it. Or I'll use Free Market if I have any interest in a corporation.

When the unhealthiness is so high, the cities probably will starve. I would stop building polluting buildings before this happens. So the scenario you mentioned will probably not happen unless I already plan to spam all those buildings everywhere.

It seems easier to stay in SP or FM and reap the respective benefits rather than to go for Environmentalism in order to be able to build forges, factories and industrial parks everywhere. The only benefit is that you don't need to build recycling centres, as they come late and lie on an optional tech path.

I regularly use Envitonmentalism. Mostly because I'm a hammers junkie who builds factories and coal plants just about everywhere. The real benefit is if you have Sid's Sushi generating extra food as Environmentalism offsets the extra from population and allows larger cities running more specialists (as long as you have enough happy faces).

I'm not sure it's the best way to go (I've never really got the hang of SP) but it's the way I like to play.

The main problem with Env in the Sushi instance is it's greatly increasing the Sushi maint cost. You may be better off not leting the cities grow quite as much to stay in Free Market.

Anyway the main use for Env civic is if you've overbuilt Coal Plants & Industrial Parks and underbuilt Super Markets.

When you have problems with slavery to handle the dirty folk. Nothing beats the pleasure of whiping the pollution down.

Future Techs give enough health if you desparately need it. I, too, build lots of mines but I use hydro and nuke plants if I'm not the first to Three Rivers -- a very high priority if I am mostly on one landmass. The mines and workshops (plus cottages if I am financial) limit growth enough that I usually don't need Environmentalism. I usually use State Property, especially if I am conquering or sited on multiple continents.

I never use it, too many disadvantages when having some corps. and the thing is, I always use to be lucky to found a few!

the only time when I "use" it, is when it is forced upon me through one of those darn global elections, or what they are called...... I do not like these elections, it feels too much like reality, like in being forced by the US to join a war or something....no offence BTW, and on top of that, we the dutch are very guilty ourselves of not having an opinion of our own, we just follow our great leader mr. Bush...

I am with Pedrojedi. If pollution does get out of hand, then switch to enviro AND slavery. In about 6 turns switch back to state property with the pollution (excess population) buried under a few new city improvements. I only can remember building a recycling center in one or two cities in the last four years of playing. Of course, if you use lots of specialists in slightly overlapping cities, this need doesn't usually arise. Also, I am not a big fan of coal plants anyway.
