Sorry for the silly question Dale, but what's RFC?

Now, back to the fascinating game design conversation.

Rhye's and Fall of Civilization, which is as Dale said an incredible mod. If you like Civ you must go download it now.

That's why LA is built the way it is in the first place.
Hmm, good point. Nevertheless, CIV doesn't deal with this now; there's no distinction for whether a city is a "New York" or a "LA". So, CiV doesn't have to tackle it either.

In game design, what is necessary is that things have a rationale that makes sense. It is not necessary that all aspects of the rationale be implemented in the game.

Power from geothermal, damns, and tides would still need to go over grids of some sort. Also, you might not want to build your powerplant right next door if it is nuclear or even coal with all that stinky smoke.
Not a big deal. You just need one transmission line from the plant to the city. That's an entirely different proposition from having to put a power line network over the entire countryside.

RFC is already included in BTS, by the way. I have played it once, but it is so frustrating to have your empire collapse (not a big one, just the size of modern day China) due to instability because of Great Depression event (happens all the time) or when you change your government. And the defeated empires keep coming back to life, every turn slows to a crawl if your PC specs are not high.

There are ways to minimize the chances of collapse. You have to focus more on infrastructure than you do in the normal game. You can't build "just enough" happy buildings to get by, for example. Build more than you think you need.

This seems to be the core design behind FfH:

              Choose your Civilization:

              Choose your Religion:

              Choose your Mana:

              And try to survive armageddon.

I have played FFH2 for over 2 months now. The mod is currently in final version but with a lot of patches coming on almost daily basis. There are a lot of new mechanics that takes time to get used to and each civ has it's own strategy. Unfortunately, I simply don't have time to explore it all at once, so be prepared to use "some" hours tp play this mod.

You want to be a dwarf? Have too little gold and the people get unhappy - have a lot of it and they reward you.
Want to be an elf? It's slow, but you can actually irrigate in the forrest. And if you're attacked - spam the enemy with treeants!
Want to be a god? It's possible - just be ready to sacrifice half your population and get into an endless war with everyone!
Or do you simply want the world to be one huge BBQ party? Go the infernal way!

I got the latest build from the home page for FFH2:

I've only been able to play scenarios so far, each time i try a 'normal' civ type game(pick leader/single player/set world etc) it crashes me to desktop.

Looking at the links for it, it seems there is now a 'media pack' for the Bts version, which wasn't there a few days ago - so that might be why i was getting the crashes on playing anything other than the scenarios? I was not getting intro movies or anything else.

Anyway documentation is a problem for the game, from a simple lack of decent readme files on how to exactly install the game correctly, to info on the game itself.

Still overall my impression from a couple of the scenarios is that this, as Dale says, is one of CIV IV's best mods. A very unique flavor, and once all the documentaion is in place it will become a must have mod for all Civ players i expect.

Sounds like your computer may not be able to play movies. You may want to try disabling movies and see if that helps. To do so change:

                      NoIntroMovie = 0

                      to

                      NoIntroMovie = 1

                      In your ..\My Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\CivilizationIV.ini file.

ok Murg, thanks for that, i'll give it a go and report back.(update: No that isn't the issue - CTD in same place 100% of the time, never mind i got quite a few scenarios to play through!!))

Still my overall impression(after getting the new 'media pack' etc) is that this is still really a work in progress. A good one mind you. Had a CTD in one of the scenarios yesterday(fall of *****(some place starting with C i think?).

Just to recap on the exact methods i used to install(and are not documented in a step by step list/readme anywhere):

                        1. installed already: Civ IV complete+BTS patch 3.17

                        2. download and install latest build of FFH
                        3. download and install latest FFH patch
                        4. downlaod and install the new 'media' files for the BTS version of FFH that appeared a few days back.(NOTE: CTD's on single play mode happend before adding these files, and still happen after adding them, so they are not part of the problem)

My Civ IV is installed on F: partition, but I changed all the above installers no problem to point to that exact install directory.

Any default start with the FFH mod running will crash on loading up , shortly after showing the screen that says in big text: "The Age of Ice is over".

I've tried using different leaders, different maps(other than the Erberus one also), setting up multiplayer hotseat mode, and all the combinations i can think of(including running default Civ IV then loading the mod from within the default game). All CTD after that "The Age of Ice is over" screen).

BUT i can play any of the scenrio's and all work fine(completed 2 so far, 3rd one CTD at a late stage(200+ turns?). I get the wonder movies no problem, so unless the intro movies use a different method to display, i'm not sure what the issue is? Still i'm having fun on the scenario's and they will do me while the game gets those pathces it needs.
Once this is all ironed out and a good set of instructions are up it will be awesome

I am usually much more interested in standard Civ than in any of the Mods...however, FFH II came to my notice via the game diaries on Fidgit.

It does sound intriguing enough that I probably will download and try it.

Your process is all good, your computer is just having a problem displaying the intro movie. Some computers can't do it even though they display the wonder movies just fine. Disabling movies should fix the issue for you.

I suspect that you may not be disabling movies correctly because if you did you wouldnt see the "Age of Ice is ended" screen at all since thats a movie.

My biggest complaint is that I can't download it from anywhere because it is only uploaded to sites that won;t let me log in.
