Also once you get the event you don't have to stay in FM right?

90% chance of being in the game at all
        Weight: 200 units
Free Market Civic & 1000 gold required

        Triguers choice of Federal Reserve 1 (-10% inflation) & Federal Reserve 2 (-200 gold & -25% inflation)

        Must have Corporation Tech

Yep, you can switch after getting the event without losing it.

Well ever since BtS Free Market is overpowered anyway (because of corporations, State Property can only compete in the short term) so most players will be running that in any case.

This may sound stupid, but I'm not that familiar with events. Can multiple civs in a MP game get this event?

            What year does inflation start?

I think I've seen it before 3000 BC once.

SP vs MP doesn't matter. I didn't see anything precluding a second player from getting it in the XML but I've yet to see anybody get it in my own games; might be easier to get on Epic or Marathon mode than Normal mode with a lot more turns though.

Inflation varies by the difficulty level.

As to unit expenses, note that Vassalage increases the number of "free units" both overall and in foreign territory -- reducing expenses. Contrastingly, Pacifism drives unit costs way up at a gold per unit, prior to considering "away" costs.

Also, it appears to me that when I add cities my unit expenses drop slightly. Is there a "so many free units per city" mechanism? Of course, the new city adds to all cities "number of cities" expense, and has its own distance cost, so overall expenses do not drop.

A bit more on Pacfiism since I've often run it; specificly under Pacifism, there is an extra charge line of 1 gold per military unit over the military unit limit. This is on top of the 1 gold for any unit over the total unit limit.
(Under non Pacfisim the charge line is there but is locked to zero; you can still see from it how many free military units you'd get)

Those figures are before the difficulty level reducing of it (0.5 to the human on Noble). But there is inflation on top of it.

Usually the incrase in city expenses & civic expenses will more than ofset the decrease in unit costs when founding a city. One minor exception: When you found your second city if you were over the limit.

Also note though that free units will also increase as your population grows. This also increases civic upkeep cost though so I find on average it's a wash.

They can help you deal with inflation, but they do not decrease inflation (they increase it, in fact).
