The bleepers are planning on NOT developing and releasing a Mac version of BtS.
And getting my new iMac has set me back enough I don't want to splurge to purchase Windows Xp yet, so I'll have to keep playing on my Gateway, whose mouse (and particularly the mouse BUTTON) is flaky.
Whatever Mac version is available, you can be assured that it will be behind the times, and that any desired mods which go beyond xml changes will not be playable on the Mac.
Never tried VMware, so I can't say. The important thing is, that it needs to support DirectX (you need Paralles v. 3 or higher for it). If you run Bootcamp, it runs just like any other Windows application, but it depends of course on your hardware capabilities.
I run it on a MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz and 3 GB memory (2 GB under Parallels) and the max video memory that you can get under Parallels (which is 64 MB in my case). As I said, it is manageable but slow in comparison to running it on Bootcamp. Civfanatics has a forum dedicated to Mac users - you will find more info there.
Civilization (1 to 4 Vanilla) was always one of the greatest games for Mac in my opinion. Well, we didn´t have much to choose from anyway when it came to games (I can only think of Myst, Marathon, Links Golf and some card games over a span of 10 years), so I am a bit disappointed we only get the Warlords expansion and not the BTS.
But Mac people are a bunch of patient fellars, so we will just wait another decade for CIV 5 ...
And by the way: I still think CIV 4 Vanilla is outstanding

Bootcamp is the best option either way ... is there a reason you won't use bootcamp? You need a license of XP for any of the options ...
My only preference for the non-bootcamp route was to have access to my mac without restarting, but I have determined (with everyone's help) that bootcamp is the way to go.
