Shoot out between Orange and Capec (8 to 8). Looks like Financial is considered a "must have" trait for most of us.

Been playing Charlemagne recently. Neither trait is on the top half of my list (PRO/IMP) but the HRE UB/UU make this civ awesome just at the point where everyone runs out of free land. Plus protective trait makes defense much simpler when one of your SODs is away creating mischief. Can support a much larger civ than normal without losing all your science.

The interesting part is that in this must win game, so many people think that a gamble on rusing is their best chance of success; either the people who voted for Huayna are playing below their difficulty level and are attacking AIs that don't have many defenders, or above their level because they would have difficulty winning without the early game advantage.

And pulling up on the outside is Hannibal, a leader that won every battle, but lost the war. In a "must win" specification, I'm surprised the Roman leaders are not doing better. I would think that their UU makes the civ almost unbeatable.

          Noble player:

I like Cyrus, and rule the world with the highly promoted immortals and axes, the best generals (or units attached to them) becoming upgraded at no cost. Preferably with epic speed, though this comes close to exploit, I know. I play for the fun of it ;-).

          edited for clarification ;-)

Huana. Two of my favourite traits, plus a great UB and Quechas.

Thoth, if the reason for no BTS is not personal finances, get with the program. BTS is the best version of Civ in many years. If it is money, God bless you -- as the Brits say.

Agran, not sure what exploit you are confessing to concerning the generals and the Heroic Epic. How does one upgrade generals? Epic increases production speed, and is usually built in the city with your embedded generals, or are we confessing to something else?

Probably referring to upgrading the unit the GG is attached to for free.

When Willem is an AI opponent with a decent starting position, he is unstoppable from the ancient times to modern. Mansa Musa always does well in the tech race but everyone seems to hate on him and he tends to get his behind pummelled

I choose Ramesses II; his spiritual trait is a must, since on a Win-or-die situation I like to change civics as much as possible; besides, IND in this situation is pretty powerful. Since a like to play marathon games, these traits get their utility amplified.

His only problem is the UU, which come way too early (gaming style definitely interferes in this declaration) ... Not my favorite.

I voted for Huayna Capac. I didn't realize that this many people liked him but I can certainly see why. When I first moved up to Monarch, my first win was with him. Same thing when moving up to Emperor... There's just something about a Quechua rush that works for me - and that something is the fact that it's cheap and reliable. And it doesn't end there, his traits also work for me so he is an easy choice.

I expected Willem to be in a huge lead because... you know why.

Looks as if Pacal, Zara Yaqob, and Ramesses have garnered more votes than 4 listed leaders (Qin Shi Huang, Bismarck, Alexander, and Tokugawa). Interesting how we see it among ourselves.

Kublai Khan turns out to be quite useful. Creative is almost as useful as Spiritual and has some nice building discounts. Not as good as Zara Yaqob, but in the ballpark, tougher troops vice cheaper costs on large empire.

Willem van Oranje. With Creative he's very helpful early in securing choke points and protecting resources and with Financial he's good for the economy for the last - what? - 80% of the game, if you play a long game.

It seems that financial is a trait many people love. All three of the top voting leaders have it
