  • Unwanted specialist

I am getting really annoyed with something odd that happens again and again in my current game - playing the CIV4 Vanilla (with latest patch as far as I know).

In one of my coastal cities I need all the possible tiles to be worked at the time being, so I don´t want a specialist there. Nevertheless, for every 2 or 3 turns - if I check the city screen, I see a Special Scientist. I switch him off to get a tile active again, but the same happens after a few more turns

This thing hasn´t occurred in any of the other cities - neither the ones founded earlier or later ...

Any clues to what is going on?

Every time you grow, the machine determines the best use of all the tiles. Also, if the enemy intrudes on a tile in use, the machine re-sorts. Apparently, the coded logic disagrees with you about the viability of that tile you like, so it doesn't put a citizen there on re-sorts. Perhaps this is a clue?

Do you have any of the 'optimize' buttons checked? You could select "optimize for food", that will probably prevent that from happening (as specialists never provide food).

This city grows very fast but only has a few hammers available, so I badly need that extra tile with a hammer and an Engineer Specialist, which I already have. There is no reason for a Scientist, and in the long run I will make the city a money machine - so a Merchant will be more handy.

No, I never use the optimize possibility, but if that is what it takes to get out of this stupidity, I might try it. I must admit I like the micro management a lot, so this is not my way of playing the game.

Thanks for your replies - and further responses are more than welcome ...

Well if the city is growing so quickly, that's probably the reason, isn't it? Could it be that when you check it again and it has a scientist, it has grown one population? The program assigns new citizens to a specific chore according to some logic, as someone pointed out already.

The optimize would simply encourage the AI not to randomly assign specialists - i'm not saying actually put it on auto, of course micro to your heart's content. Just put the optimization button on for the automatically placed citizens, if it bothers you for them to be made specialists

You might try selecting all the optimizations, food, hammers and gold. When all are selected, the governor is less likely to create specialists during city growth and place new citizens on the land tiles instead.

The automatic assigning of specialists bugs me too. I think there should be an option in the Custom Game settings for something like Governor does not assign specialists. Has this been modded?

Was your production set to "Research"?

Thanks for the nice help and guessings everyone ('')

I will try the optimize thing for this city and see how it works out - otherwise I have the nice option of just throwing the unwanted specialist into the sea right next to his window

No, my production was not set to research at all.

All in all it looks a bit like a bummer/bug in the Vanilla - but what do I know ...

Upgrade to BTS -- like a whole other game. However, in this specific case, the AI would probably still choose a specialist. This is especially true if your city is nearing its caps for happiness or health.

But it would now choose a Spy specialist

Oh yes, I would gladly upgrade to BTS - but then you will have to tell the makers of CIV4 that we are a couple of Apple freaks who like the game too. Nothing has happened since the very late Warlords (which I would never dream of buying), so I guess we´ll wait another decade - CIV time - for the # 5
