  • Having Problems from downloading 3.17 patch

First of all, I am totally new to this site, and I don't know or play the civ game. Secondly I am somewhat computer illierate-- maybe first grade, ya know?

So my ignorance may show through in my question!

My son plays Civ IV, Beyond the Sword, and downloaded the 3.17 patch. (Not from the fixarus site, because it took so long, it looked like it might not even be downloading--he waited over 1 1/2 hours). He doesn't remember where he got it, he googled it. Well, ever since, he keeps getting a virus in his temp files.

The bug is a win32 trojan. We quarantine it and it comes back. We empty all the temp files, run a AV scan, it comes back.

Is there any chance we got it from the downloading of the patch?

Should we be uninstalling everything and reinstalling?

Can anyone direct me what to do about it's coming back, or should I be heading to a geek board for this?

    Thanks!

uninstall and reinstall everything is always a good first step
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

... and tell your son to be really, really careful about where he downloads stuff.

        1. Uninstall Civ4 and reinstall (basic BtS 3.00) as said above. Obviously the patch he downloaded included a virus

        2. Download http://boa.apolyton.net/civ4/files/o...Patch_v317.exe

That's the official patch file from our mirror.

        3. Follow DaveV's advice

Thank you all for your advice. We will reinstall everything Civ related! LOL!

Normally I check any site he goes to as to whether or not it looks safe enough to download from, but he was trying to hook up with a friend to play online with and the patch from Fixarus was taking too long, so he asked if he could look up another location for a patch.

I was busy and let him, but didn't check where he was. I know my own judgement of which sites to dl from are also limited--I figure the creators of a game should be safe, but since he was having trouble there--I didn't know where else to have him look. I guess I'm as much to blame because i let him just look it up on google.

We've both learned something! I appreciate your help--We'll be back if we need more direction!
