So I played a game of Civ with a friend. It was pretty balanced between the two of us, him having the bigger empire, me being on a decent tech lead. Thus i went for the spaceship. He couldnt see what i was researching, but i could see his research. I knew he had fission. And since we play in the same room, and i keep my sound on, he was able to figure i got Laser, even though he doesnt know english (´You have discoverd Laser´ it says). I am not sure if he realized, that this enables SDI. Anyways - just two turns before i finshed building it, he nuked the hell out of me.
Before the 2 turns were over, almost all of my cities have been nuked. I didnt posses nukes yet, nor had i researched ecology (which enables cleaning fall-out) yet, so global warming sky-rocketed. But i didnt fold up. Instead i told him, when his attack started, that i´d be able to close pandora´s box and asked him, being fully aware of the answer, if he could do the same... My people even celebrated occasionally while it kept raining nukes. But the SDI later on did a great job. He was still ages away from Laser, when i finally had my ICBMs ready to retaliate. A UN vote came up, suggesting peace between us. We both voted ´Yes´, but were overruled by the AIs. But none of us was ready to negotiate directly with each other. That in itself was a fun situation. I mean: How can i talk peace to someone who just did a massive nuclear raid on me, without even wanting my land. It was like he had said:´Oh, you can keep your land - we just want you dead´... But still i wanted peace... (I said: ´I demand compensation´ - he replied: ´I´ll give you compensation´ *BOOOM* )
After 15 years (epic speed from 1948 to 63 - 30 turns) he gave it up, since i still kept building space-ship parts and hit his cities on a 1:1 ratio as he kept hitting mine (tho he kept launching a lot more ICBMs than i did - thanks to my SDI). In the end, statistics showed, that he had launched 49 (!) ICBMs at me (against 7 all-hitters of mine, first one around 1955 maybe) - and i still won (or rather: he folded)... that was a well earned victory i´d say, worth sharing here.
