How do I give away or destroy a city?

At war with Shaka, I took one of his cities and wanted to give it to one of my friendly neighbours but it was redded out along with the rest of my own cities, so I couldn't. I didn't want to keep it so decided to destroy it but I couldn't find an option either on the main screen or on the city screen.

2 questions: 1. Why couldn't I give it away? 2. Is there not a way to destroy a city (as there was in the old Civ)?

BTW, it gives me tremendous pleasure to really smash Shaka's empire.

No way to destroy a city once you keep it.

In many games, if I wait 3 or 4 turns, I will see the liberation button on the F1 (Domestic Advisor) screen, and I can get a boost for giving it away.

Hi ,

when you take the city you will get an option to either install a new gov or to raze it , ...

give away , well there are many options , you may give it back or give to an other civ , or as in some mods use let it be independent

Panag: I wasn't clear. I know I could destroy it when I took it. I meant afterward if I changed my mind, which is what happened when found I couldn't give it away. I had no options of that nature. As I say, the city was shown in red in my things-to-trade list. That was the problem. Then I couldn't figure out how to destroy it so I pulled my couple of tanks out, left it empty, and of course Shaka sent someone in to re-take it and I then took it from him and chose to raze it.

yep you have to wait then , if you want to be done with it , try to give it to an other nation , ..... maybe you will provoke a war with some one else and Shaka , ...

I don't claim to know the mechanics , but the way i have come to understand it is that you can't trade a city which has a large amount of foreign population in it, though you normally can liberate it back whence it came. I presume it is to avoid exploits.

Occasionaly its a pain, but it seems fair enough to me - and its not like we are missing historical features. Yes cities might be traded back and forth between teh two waring parties, but not give to a civ continents away.

So, best to raze it then, to avoid it going back to its original owner which, I presume, is what happens if I liberate it.

it does not mean cause you cant give it to one civ that you cant give to an other , ...


note ; when the city is in turmoil you cant give it away and have to wait X amount of turns (!)

Trading a city back and forth can cost you serious money if your opponent's treasury is empty and yours is not. Shaka's not much of a saver so the loot on taking one of his cities is small. When he takes it from you the looted amount depends on your treasury. If you "forgot" to raze one, better off to keep it and give it back later, when your gift will better war-battered relations. With Monty and Shaka best to kill them off and fiddle with the city as best you can.

I have been able to. I was liberating Dutch territory from the Zulus, and I only got the liberate option on the first one, after that I had to take the city and then gift it to them through diplomacy and I was able to do that on the turn that I took it.

Third party cities, e.g., liberating persian cities from french control are different. As noted by Garth Vader, you will get a chance to give them back to the civ with most of the population, if it is still around. Also, don't be surprised, if you do not give it back to see the original civ regain control of most of the surrounding squares. So, other than to draft or slave, you won't be able to do much with such a city anyway. Giving it away does help your relations with the receiver quite a bit.
