  • Later Game Question

I think I am doing well enough in the latter game that I will be around.

Would it be a smart move to remove the science buildings later as to save gold upkeep?

Any other buildings I should dump?

Thnaks and also, does anyone have a suuggestion at what point I could implement this mass pruning.

    Thanks in advance

Buildings don't cost gold in upkeep... so no

You're thinking Civ3 gramps... you can't sell buildings in Civ4 (and have no reason to want to).

Now, units could be a different story...

Do you actually remove/kill units because of unit upkeep? I have overextended myself in military because of reaction to multiple DOWs. If I survive and pushback I sometimes I have changed my production too far into military and I have more troops than I need to enforce the peace once it has been declared. I also had it once when I overestimated a Civ's military and pushed hard and didn't lose troops. Suddenly I had the equivalent of two armies but not enough economy to go to war again immediately.

When I consider the option to kill troops, it always seems like a bad idea and I work the economy up until I can afford things again, but that can be a challenge. and take time where the other civs are scheming and teching like fiends. So, since you mentioned it, do you actually delete troops? And what becomes the determining factor whether the balance of military risk and economical load warrants killing your own troops.

Also, would it make sense to gift them to somebody at that time? Would you gift them to a vassal to up their strength?

There has to be some situation where this would be a good idea, but I haven't found it yet.

This only happens to me in the midgame. If I'm expanding and running into economic problems and don't need the troops for Martial law (usually if I've built the pyramids and using rep. ), I'll go back and disband most of my warriors. I'll save one if he has one or two promotions in case I get a GG. But the rest, I'm never going to pay to upgrade them so see ya.

Later game I may do the same with axeman and chariots that weren't used in combat and don't have promotions.

The units most likely to be disbanded are galleys and tiremes. I may promote one to a caraval, but they're too expensive to uprade to anything else.

I rarely delete units except workers, and even then rarely - it's usually not expensive enough to justify bothering. I didn't mean to say you should, just that it could be argued

Yeah, it usually doesn't save more than 5 to 10 gold since I don't disband many, but for me it's the principle of it. That warrior standing next to the rifleman looks a bit silly.
