  • Are obsoletions global?

Small question. If I invent something that obsoletes something, does that work globally?
For example, I invent Astronomy, does that obsoletes all monuments in the world? So also for those civs that are behind in tech?

Nope... it's only obsolete once YOU research it, for yourself.

Unless of course, you BUY (or extort) the tech from someone else.

        Minor exception:

When the owner of the AP discovers the tech that obsoletes it, it's shut down for everybody, not just the owner.

A good reason to own the AP

Not necessarily. There are situations where it can be advantageous to let someone else build it if you can be sure the builder will be a civ of your religion. If you own the Apostolic Palace yourself, the goal of keeping the Apostolic Palace active as long as possible (thereby maintaining its production bonus for religious buildings) can clash with the goal of researching Mass Media early in order to build the wonders that come with that tech. But if someone else owns the Apostolic Palace, you can research Mass Media however early you want to without rendering the Apostolic Palace obsolete.

Doesnt the UN (wonder of mass media IIRC) obsolete the AP globally ? Or only its voting functions (eg not the hammer bonus) ?

When I discovered the Mass Media tech in my current game (I had captured the AP, someone else had the chair):
the member section of the F8 went blank, and the hammer bonuses vanished.

It's particularly interesting when you obtain the tech that obsoletes whales, ivory, or fur, but can still import it from another civ that doesn't have that tech yet.

It's that "imported" label that makes it more alluring. I have no problem with it, personally.
