  • That was close!

I had launched my spaceship when I got a message that one of Darius' cities had achieved Legendary cultural status. When I looked at the Victory screen I noticed that it was his second and that a third was way up there. Checking each turn I noticed that he was gaining culture in that last city rapidly and I figured that he would probably pull off a Cultural Victory a couple of turns before my spaceship landed at the rate he was going. Since he was my vassal I couldn't just attack his cities, so I tried to order him to change civics and make him go into anarchy, which he did. Unfortunatley he was having a Golden Age at the time so he was able to switch immediately. So I had to wait until that was over, but the next time I tried to order a civic change, he at first refused. And who says the AI is stupid! However he was happy to oblige when I offered to bribe him into a civic change and gave him a tech and a bunch of gold. That bought me enough time that I was able to have my ship land on AC before he won his cultural victory.

Although it would have pissed me off to have him win in the end, I kind of like the idea that the AI is now smart enough to try and pull that off. My end game turned into a real nail-biter instead of some boring slog while just waiting for my ship to land.

Nice way to beat him. I had a game where Pacal was going to get his 3rd city to legendary before my ship got to AC so I had to go take that city out. I think I spent almost my entire military to do it because I didn't have time to bombard his defensive bonus' away. But once my ship was launched I had no worries other that killing his city.

Haha, I had this happen to me too.

The inca where my chief rivals, Then a war happened and thier tech growth STOPPED after that, I figured I must have just hurt him good enough. It just didnt click in my head...

      I launch my ship... 30 turns. /sigh.

      'Corioachina has reached legendary culture!'

      'What was that?'

I go have a look and I notice his capital and the new one at 100%. Look into the victory screen and see the third is not far off... 'Whoa!' Maybe 5 or 6 turns away. I almost missed it!

Luckily my marines where close by and his capital was coastal. I think I burned (burnt?) 15 or more wonders to the ground there.

It ended up being my best game yet. I probably could have pulled off a domination victory since I had already vassalized everyone on my entire continent and there were a couple of civs on the other one that were pretty weak. But it would have been such a hassle transporting a bunch of troops across the ocean and I had already started building the ship so I just decided to sit back and do that instead. I ended up with an Augustus Caesar ranking, my best yet. It would have pissed my right off if he would have squeeked by on a cultural win, especially that close to the end. Good thing I was paying attention.

Reminds me of the time I launched my ship as Mansa was heading for a culture victory. I was far enough ahead that he had no chance though, so he started teching again, and here is the funny part: he asks me for uranium and fission. I can't possibly imagine what he wanted those for.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Now you see, as much as I like nail-biting final encounters I think that that decision was indicative of really poor AI. Basically, Darius could have won the game but he lost it for one tech and some gold.

Not sure how great that is when you think about it.

He was his vassal, so he could not make a complete dinial.

Exactly. You're poised to complete your conquest when you suddenly get a Cultural Victory.
