  • Help needed - I can no longer play vanilla

I uninstalled BTS, Warlords and Vanilla. I reinstalled Vanilla, but it no longer loads. I get the loading screen for a short while and then nothing. Have not yet tried to reinstall Warlords and BTS.

Anyone have any idea what is wrong and how I can fix it?

(I realise this is not much info, but any ideas appreciated.)

Civ IV, like most games, tends to leave a bunch of directories behind when you uninstall it. Something might have got left behind and messed things up when you tried to reinstall.

    Try:

    -Uninstalling Civ IV
-Delete any Civ IV related folders found in program files/firaxis games
-Delete any Civ IV related folders found in My Documents/My Games
-Unfortunately I believe there are a couple of hidden folders that get left behind as well. You first need to turn on show hidden folders and then I just do a search for any folders called 'Civilization'. They tend to be in the local settings/applications data folders.
-Reinstall Civ IV and hope that it works.

Thanks for the advice; I'll give it a try. Interestingly, Warlords appears to work fine after the re-load.

PS After reinstalling Warlords, vanilla is now working. No doubt it makes sense to my computer, but I find it odd. Now to try BTS.

I got a new computer and found that Vanilla wouldn't run without the patch installed.

It probably was a DirectX problem, actually; DirectX is funny about things like that, and it's possible one of the later DirectX things (or video card driver things) caused the patch to be necessary to allow it to work in that version.

That may be it. I think that vanilla got patched when I installed Warlords. (I couldn't patch it myself from within game because it wouldn't load.) Anyway, I have now reinstalled BTS and everything seems to be working OK. Thanks for all the comments, guys.
