  • Wtf ? Woot!!!

    I didn't believe what i just saw:

This is the first time an AI refuses to ally with me for that reason.

Did this already happen to anybody ?

My theory is that this alliance would make us win the game by domination (i am Boudica of Japan, and just took the last holy city of the map and am first on everything but wonders). But why would the AI refuse to win, event through alliance ?

PS: I just killed a (injured) machine gun with a GG Samurai
PS 2: I think this means that i really have to play on higher difficulties.

Ok, this came out to be my first domination victory ever (ok, mainly because i usally quit winning games before the end), and i saw that crude but effective video attached to that type of video.

Normalized score: 45365, domination in 1859 AD.

Your theory is correct. They won't become your vassal if it would trigger domination (or conquest).

Actually he is refusing permanent alliance...

Ok let's make this post a little more serious. I actually played a strat i never played (of if, not at this scale). I'd like to discuss it because it seems pretty effective, but i am aware of this being a "first try".

I started by getting 4 citys ASAP, two of them having gems for quick commerce boost, the two others were coastal, one having ivory, so did manage to get some commerce too. I started in the middle of a jungle so that i had to get IW very quickly (5th research or so) and slaved monument & grenary out of each city ASAP. I had them build barraks, 8 archers and 4 settlers, repeating the settle&slave manoeuvre, for two more mining and two more coastal citys. The fifth city actually had 4 food ressources, but i had to beeline calendar because of three of my citys having bananas.
I managed to oracle metal casting and builded the colossus in my capital, along with moai statues (12 water tiles, 3 of them beeing lakes, 2 being seafood).
I ran through the classical with 1 archer and a spear per city, all citys building markethouse, courthouse, library, stables and coliseum (quest for +4 from coliseum).

Once i got into the medieval, i researched all the unit-techs quickly, And put all but my last-founded city on chain-production of 1 crossbow - 1 elephant - 2 samurai - 1 pikemen - 1 trebuchet - 1 knight - 1 crossbow - etc... From the early middle-ages to the later renaissance i only switched to buildings boosting commerce, producing units the most of the time.

My fist assault was before i got knights, and i headed for lincolns terrytory (my other neighbour was Charlemagne) and wiped him out, getting 2 holy citys, AP, parthenon, Hagia Sophia, a bunch of 15 workers and 4 other (surprisingly well-placed) citys.
Knights coming in about the end of this invasion, came out to be useless if you already have samurai + elephants, crossbows and pikes guarding my citys (two of both in each city, + an elephant sometimes for counter-attacks).

Lincoln had given up Boudhism (my religion) just before the war, so that Charlemagne (who founded it) was on my side, even if he did not join the fight.

Augustus surrendered to Charlemagnes hordes of missionarys and joined our faith, so that i would have to leave him alone for a while (he was behind Lincoln's former territory). He opened his borders to me, allowing to respond to Frederics and Hatchepsouts (the evil hindous) war declaration. I took Hatchepsout's capital which was a double-holy city, and slaved out forbidden palace to allow my further conquest so far away from home. That made her renounce to Frederic as a master, and after razing two of her citys, she capitulated to me.

Her former master took me about a century of war, beeing spead over an archipel for about 1/3 of his empire. He capitulated when he had only 4 citys left. Among the citys i conquered, there was the one with the mausoleum in it. At this point, the first muskets appeared all over the world, Charlemagne beeing the avant-garde of this military revolution.

I now had a huge empire that was stabilising it's economy, allowing me to run at 60% science once the forbidden palace was built. It looked awful to me, since it took me 40 turns to research education during the war. But once the huge armys were back in my boders, and the cottages were growing, it was an ongoing process to one of the strongest economic powers on the map (terra map btw).

Since i had been very busy with warfare, i didn't care about the new world where Augustus, Qin Shi and Charlemagne started to create colonys (respectivly Bismark, Churchill and Ghengis). I never had problems with theese, and just didn't care about.

The time of consolidation should not be too long, since Charlemagne, confident with his tech lead, declared war on me once i got grenadeers (upgraded the crossbows and the pikes, the knights became cuirassiers, samurais standing by). I remained defensive until i got steel, then upgraded the treb's to cannons and headed my HUGE samurai stack towars the machine-gun guarded holy boudhist city of Tenochtitlan. Augustus and Qin Shi joined my fight, evryone being shocked about this betrayal. With the united power of the Japanese, the German and the Khmer empire, we crushed the Aztecan, leaving him two citys when he capitulated to me.

It was time now, for the final stage. Emancipation and Universal sufferage granting a huge boost to my economy, the industrial revolution had to begin. Assembly line was researched, and every city built a factory and a japanese power-plant. Electricity opened the way to complete industrialisation, and many cityzens died from the smog generated by the tank factorys. Kyoto built the broadway for entertaining, the entire empire worked on the huge army of tanks, backed by the veterans of the great wars, now bearing riffles and fullfilling the role of the infantry core.

The target of this neverseen army was the german empire of Augustus, where several wonders were built over the centurys. The combined power of the tanks and the brand-new artillery took the most of it over in about 20 turns, making him capitulate, leading to the domination victory.

It was a great game, but I bearly fell behind in tech, and had to have SEVERAL citys building wealth to keep up with others. I am sure this is perfectible. I generally built up the conquered citys with at least greanary, courthouse, forge and the two AP religion buildings, then building commerce (wealth or science) buildings and having the build wealth once they have the buildings.

        Thoughts ?

Well, they won't peacefully become your vassal. You can still get vassalage through war even if it will win you the game.

I wonder if my building strat was the best one... i builded units normally and slaved out the commerce buildings as soon as they were available.

I slaved out security agency and prison too.

Many years ago, my cousin from Quebec spent a summer with us. His English wasn't good, but with TV, and his playing Civ I obsessively (well, I guess that's the only way to play), he learned english pretty well.
