This ever happen to anyone? Late game 805kb file and focus came on a unit and total FREEZE. I couldn't bring up task manager and I couldn't even shut the PC from the button. I actually had to cut off electricty. It seemed to be okay after I loaded on the reboot, but now I am getting paranoid.

I have found this to happen later in games with large maps and tons of units. It usually only happens if I've been playing for a very long time. Just rebooting the machine solves the problem. I don't have the newest machine in the world, but it's still far beyond the basic requirements needed for the game.
Stuff happens... but I have seen no long term problems from it.Keep on Civin'

That usually happens on computers low on the memory and particularly graphic memory (or even graphics card) scale. What's your graphics card (incl. gram) and CPU/RAM?<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

There is still a memory leak in the game. If you run for a long time regardless of map size, you will have an issue. Now, I run on a laptop, so I always get an error and it throws me out of Civ. However, a freeze is certainly possible and you never see the error. Map size will be the converse of running time, I can get a day with it in and out of my background on a huge map before it catches up to me. If you shutdown Civ every 4 hours or so you should be OK, regardless of map size. Also, have your autosave turn on so you can get back close to the turn your computer froze.

Generally the memory leak will not cause a freeze like that, however... what will most frequently happen is the game will have too much going on in the GPU, which is certainly helped by shutting down (ie, cool it down).<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

I haven't had music play since Civ II
To me, it seems to happen more often the longer I play, and the more units that are on the board. It's rare enough that it's not really a problem. And it is a simple fix. Worse case, I lose a turn and have to replay it... No big deal.Keep on Civin'

Aproximatively same thing happens to me, but with a blue screen on top. The solutions proposed by the others worked for me. Try not to have the latest driver if you have an nVidia grahic card, it's somehow less compatible with civ then the older ones... don't ask me why.

Vampgelus, could you specify the issue with the nvidia card? I have the same freeze all the time. 85 kb map or 850 kb, same thing. it seems to freeze at random and I think it has to do with the latest driver install. before freeze you can actually see the graphics/units "fall apart". if you're lucky and quick enough it is possible to get taskmanager up. getting it on screen solves the whole problem and "defreezes" the game. I have managed to retrieve some error messages like "error in gamecore dll" and "error in nvidia_disp.dll"
details: nvidia geforce 7900GS, 2x1024 ram, dell 9150. large map, 9 civs (only), all in-game graphics options set to minimum, video's off, etc. also, most of the unused processes are killed before I start a game. it has a slight possitive effect on performance.

My issue, is displayed on a blue screen as "nv4_disp.dll has hooked up into an endless loop, system is shut down to prevent damage on the graphics card". It seems as well to occur less on small maps, without mod, and by shutting down other programs. I have a 8600 GT, 512 MB graphical memory, 2x1024 DDR2 RAM, Intel ViiV 2,8 GHz.

thanks Vampgelus for the quick reply!
yep, exactly the same error on my side. I've got intel ViiV 3,2 ghz with 256 mb card, that was well enough to run the game for ages. I have also posted on the other thread with question how to get back to the previous driver. although that probably will not do the job since that was the reason that I updated the drivers :-(
thanks again, I will continue reading the other thread that was started by you.
