I was well on my way to a Domination victory, having 3-4 vassals, when I decided to liberate an island of 3 captured cities. I had done this 2-3 times previously in the same game with no issues. I liberate this island and ALL my vassals go apes**t - they break away from me (all were capitulated into vassalage), and declare war on me!!! What gives?

That's a bug. "Liberating" a civ means you create another civ - but there are only 18 civ slots, and if you create a new civ when there's no new civ slot, but there IS an old civ slot which no longer exists due to it being dead, that civ gets that slot.
Unfortunately, it also gets all of its diplomatic past, including state of war with civs...
That is fixed in Bhruic's patch, and will be fixed in the next official patch.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.
