  • The Regina Monologues

In my current game (Emporer, Standard Pangea, No Vassals) I am playing as Alexander. I have 'Friendly' status with Victoria of England (#1 in power, military, land). But every third or fourth turn she keeps pestering me. She wants my fish when she already has a surplus (NO, she hasn't built Sid's Sushi yet). Or she wants my only fur. Or she asks me to covert to her religion (which I do, then switch back). Always something.

I wish there was a way (other than war - she'd wax me) to get her to stop talking to me.

    Any hints/tips?
And indeed there will be time To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". t s eliot

Well, its probably not what your looking for, but arrange a trade embargo against her. She wont talk to you for a while, and youll suffer a diplo-hit of course, but I doubt shed declare war on u... at least not at first...

      NO

Being higher on the power graph can help but it will never completely stop the demands.

I have the complete opposite problem when trying to court certain AIs for future alliance. Sometimes they just WONT ask for anything, so never a diplo bonus... /sigh.

Yes I'm talking about you Willem.

If the AI does not want to trade any techs with me, then the AI should not come and start demanding my latest breakthrough. Even if I am much more powerful than the AI, I cannot ask for simple tribute, but the AI can ask anything from me. I also hate the diplomacy penalty that comes from the AI making ridiculous demands.

These sorts of diplo-cheats are getting to me in my current game too. What is really annoying me is the way Rameses is keeping ahead in the tech game. He seems to have a decent enough rate of research, acquiring Divine Right well ahead of it’s time, but trades (or is gifted) techs all the time from other civs. No sooner am I drawing level, when he makes another couple of leaps ahead which a tech that Washington or Asoka has just got.

It’s got to the stage where I will not trade a tech now unless I can manage a 3 or 4 trade swap (give the rate of exchange I get something like 60% in value back on the deal). And I know that, if I give the tech to Asoka, Rameses will have it before my next turn. It’s just too much of a coincidence that they both get Paper at the same time.

Worse thing is that all of the culprits are not my neighbours so I can’t simply set out to destroy one of this tech-tag-team. There’s nothing for it but for me to plough my through my nearest (and richest) neighbours with what tech lead I have on the way to a domination win. Diplo and Space victories don’t seem to be on the cards for me here.

It sounds like using the tech brokering option will resolve most of your complaints. I just shut off tech trading and go from there.

Play custom games, and turn off tech trading, or tech brokering. With "No tech brokering" techs can still be traded, but you can only trade techs you have researched yourself. It's not going to shut them down totally, but it will prevent Civ A from acquiring Nationalism from Civ B in a trade, then immediately passing it off to Civ C, D, and E.
Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

Say, does that apply to giving tech in exchance for peace?
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

I would assume giving would be treated the same as trading, but I've never tried it. (since tech trading is ALWAYS off these days)

Trading is the same as giving, just trading with nothing coming back in return
