Sample bias indeed. Fanatic players focused on a single game years after its release are asked to vote on whether they enjoy increased complexity (based on time consumed) and they vote yes. I would think the sample was about as biased as it could get. But, somehow in a good way.

Epic =| increased complexity. Epic = more time spent on making the same decisions.

Actually, Epic = more time living with your decision set to date before you can change it. As my sig implies, you have to live the life you chose.

Not quite true. You have more decisions per discrete element, especially units.

            Normal usually, with some epic.
Quick is way too slow, except maybe for MP.
I'd like epic most if it wasn't so slow on bigger maps.
Marathon I feel is both unbalanced and boringly slow.

Sample bias actually in that Apolyton tends to be SP players, while other sites have most of the MP players.

You have the same amount of techs to research, the same amount of land to plant cities into. The same amount of AI to kill. The same resources to trade. The same improvements to build and buildings to make. You just have more turns to do it in.

The only thing that you get more of is the amount of turns in which to move units; it's the same amount of decisions every turn, just there are more turns to make the decisions in. The only game speed that makes a differences is marathon because you can make more units and hence you can get more choices because you have more units to move than in a corresponding turn on a different difficulty level.

The longer games usually involve more warfare at each tech level, because you have the units for relatively longer compared to how long it takes to arrive at an enemy's walls. Particularly on marathon, but this is still true on epic. Normal and quick (SP) games can generally involve much less risk of attack as long as you are able to outtech the AI, because when he brings his axemen in, you have crossbows.

I usually play normal but have a marathon MP game running just for the experience.

I dont think, you should insult this guy (or anyone, really), before having learned what he did... or am i mistaken that he is the author of the tectonics-map-script, that i enjoyed for a good while ?

I'm glad to learn that, at 36, I'm still a kid.
As for attention span, well, that's not the point. I happen to be 36, have a wife, children, and therefore less time than some to spend on games that drag forever.
Although I do play some games that last for months, but that's usually MP dominions, not Civ.
And I don't think my tectonics script made the gamemore stupid. Nor do I think that Clash was a stupid game project.

I'll still explain 'slow' a little bit even though I believe I may be losing my time doing this.
Start game. Lose your warrior to a lucky bear. You have nothing to do except pressing Next turn until your production and research are done. That's slow, but not a problem as it rarely happens and the ai (hint) processes its turns pretty fast.
End game. Move 5 or 6 unit stacks. Update one or two city build queues. Click end turn. Wait for the ai to move even more units. Wait. Wait = slow. Of course, I can alleviate that on small, tiny or duel maps, but then I'd have a bigger/longer game on a normal epic or large normal game.

prelynmax: You might also remember that Civ IV initially didn't have a Marathon speed. So how would liking the game as it was out of the box can be considered 'stupifying' the game?
I'll rest my case now, but, please try to understand other people may like things different from you without being stupid.

Given that the vote stands at 90 to 28 in favor of the longer speeds, gratuitous flaming seems out of bounds. Civ people are generally not "stupid" to begin with and flaming the majority just doverts the subject. Chill!

Nothing to do with attention span. Just a limited time and so much to do
