  • Zara's a good bloke...

The other day I came across something new. I began a game as the Khmer, everything was going along pretty smooth, had an early war, picked up a city and made a few friends on the way.

Zara of the Ethiopians was one of my friends, I met him early and he was pleased with me from the get go (I found this pretty odd in itself since I'm playing aggressive AI on emporer). He was the tech leader and I was pretty backward compared to the rest but I was on my way to alphabet. Then with about 7 turns to go, my new best friend Zara popped up and asked me if I'd find alphabet helpful. So he freely offered it to me and I of course welcomed it with open arms.

Anyone else come across something like this?

    No.

    Never.
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

It's pretty common for the AI to gift techs to backward civs (at least to the player). It makes sense from a game point view. The main goal is to make a fun game and if you are too far behind it's no fun anymore. Therefore the AI is programmed to help you in that situation.

And it happens more often on higher levels, simply for the reason that player tends to be more backwards.

Eh, about as likely as him declaring war.

On Emperor, I've had Zara offer to sell me a tech for the bargain price of 7500 .

Never had him give me any tech.

Hey, maybe I don't suck that much since no one has ever offered me a free tech.

Mansa has gifted me 2 techs in the course of my games. Hatshepsut once. Zara, he is a kaniving bacstabbing sonof-a that you need to watch close. I dont care how friendly he is, he will declare war at some point. And since he is so good at this game, His declarations could be game breaking.

Yeah he must have really felt sorry for me, I think this thread might have gone into the "I'm so bad at civ 4 that..."

Anyway, I might repay his good will by sending a force of ballista elephants into his juicy, wonder filled lands... if I can get to construction before he has infantry!

Up to now I've always tried to not drop too far behind in tech on the very high levels. Perhaps it is a better idea to not tech at all and concentrate on bribing the AIs to fight each other... But that feels too much like an AI exploit.
