If you want to know whether or not it has any wonders in it, just look in the Stats/top 5 cities screen. Scroll thru to see if any wonders are listed.

Otherwise, you can guess by how large the city and what items you can see from the zoomed-in main screen.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Yeah, once you get used to it you can see the wonders around the city (if you are zoomed in enough).
And indeed there will be time To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". t s eliot

Wonders aren't a problem. You can zoom into the map and usually see what wonders have been built into the city. You can bet your sweet life that I know what Zeus looks like, because that's the first city I will go after when attacking the civ that has it

Sure enough... but you can't tell if it has a bunch of general's or other great people settled there. Plus, just because a city is large means nothing.

Re: Is the following a good strategy for religion?

In cities you already have their religons: Take full advantage of the structures (as needed). It's obvious your planning a war so you probably don't want to slow down your unit production too much but cities at their current happy limit that are missing temples for religions present would definately benifit.

If you have chosen a state religion, you do want to spread that but only if that AI isn't already actively spreading it to your cities for you.
But you probably don't want to spread non-state religions considering your planned war.

Assuming you haven't built the wonder allowing Free Religion early and also don't have Liberalism, the non default religious civics only work if you have a state religion.

I'm afraid of the civs ahead of me pulling too far ahead before I'm in position to crush them militarily. I figure if I inadvertently fund their unit-creation capability I'll only be hurting myself in the long run despite the short-term benefit to me. Maybe it's good enough to share the religion of the leader--so as to ward off attack--and leave it at that?

I would certainly spread one religion.

As has been said teh possibility of temples and monastries is too good to miss, just for teh sake of avoidign the minor gold benefit to your enemeies.

But, perhaps more importantly, if you don't have a religion you can't benefit from teh religious civics. 25% bonus on all buildings is serious; as is 2 extra XP when building that army to conquer the shrines (with a barracks giving the next promotion, which means CRII - an extra 20 or is it 25% attack).
