Cottage econemy

Usually I run a GP econemy using Scientists as my main specialist. I can win games on monarch difficulty pritty easy doing this.

But it seems that whenever I try to use a cottage econemy Im not even devoting half the amount
of beakers to science. And usually I fall behind.
even thought I get early currency and banking.

Is there something im missing? Some type of government? some tech? I usually over expand then build cottages next to every river tile. I specialize most of my citys with cottages and depending on the location I'll have a city specialize on production and a city that uses specialists.

That's my stock in trade and it seems to work well enough for me.

Are you getting pottery in early and building cottages first?

Cottage economy works well with strategies that involve somewhat slower expansion and less production (as a larger number of citizens will be working tiles with cottages rather than tiles with hammers). Specialist economy works better with a faster expansion (because the # of scientists grows with the number of cities faster than the cottage income does, given the cottage lag, so you can more easily afford the new cities) but is ultimately inferior in the late eras compared to a similarly done cottage economy with a similar expansion level at Industrial (but the speed of growth can of course make it much larger by that point - hence the two different strats).

Indeed. Specialist economies excel during the early expansion and while they will remain useful for very long, a cottage economy will ultimately be more potent in terms of raw commerce/science/gold.

Both approaches have their strong points and I personally like to start off with a specialist economy almost every time but will gradually move towards a cottage economy while still having a few specialist cities supporting while the cottages mature.
