  • Civ4/ BtS "automated" install/ uninstall

    Sorry if this is affected by the piracy rule. IMO, it is not; it's a technical question

    Let's say I have a computer that I only occasionly want to have BtS installed on. Instead of installing the game everytime, I simply want to make a script that copies the files and add what's necessary to the registry. I don't think it will be too hard to find what registry keys I should add/ remove, but are there also some system files/ directories that Civ/ BtS does changes to when installing?

      Screwing around with the registry like you're talking is an easy way to hose your computer. Not for the faint of heart, and I doubt you'd find someone willing to help you do it. That's kind of like saying "I want to try open heart surgery; tell me how." If you're asking the question then you really probably are in above your head.

      Much easier would simply be to install the dang game on a usb drive.

        If you're talking about a 'work computer' that the registry is relevant (ie, you can't afford to have the registry be noticed), I think the easiest thing to do would be to somehow do a diff on the registry between a pre-installation copy and a post-installation copy (ie, back up the registry right before installation) and export the keys that are relevant to an export file.

        I don't think there's much outside the my documents folder, the program files folder, and the installshield stuff, unless you are worried about DirectX.

        Like wodan said, if the changes being noticed isn't the problem, then you probably should go the USB install route.

          @wodan:
          Well, in that case, I am a surgeon, I just need information about this specific heart

          @snoopy:
          You hit the nail Going travelling and sit alone on a hotel room without civ? Don't think so. The registry shouldn't be a problem (and I don't think it's much when I've look for Civ in there earlier), but if there aren't anything outside, e.g. in system folders etc., this could work fine.

          Installing it on a USB stick would probably cause the game to run slow, but it's not problem for me just copying and removing the files or even hide them.
