  • What produces the Great People

Through the period of a game I will get lots of Great Artists, a handful of Great Scientists, and almost no Great Merchants. Is that because I tend to favour culture over other things, or does my style of gameplay have nothing to do with it? Is there a way to increase the chance of getting a Great Merchant more often?

You must be new to civ4.

That is why I will keep my advice simple. Try having more merchant specialists if you want Great Merchants.
(by holding the mouse for a few minutes over the bar with great people points, you will get a procentual breakdown of the probability of the next great person being a scientist, merchant, artist, spy, &#8230)

Also when you think about building a wonder look which kind of great people points it generates.

As you may have guessed from this advice, you get great people points from wonders(BTW the Great Lighthouse provides GM points) and specialists.

If you want more great people run the civic called pacifism. If you can not have merchant specialists try to build commercial buildings like grocers (civilization pretty much follows common sense about these things) or run the labour civic cast system.

Have fun and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Thanks, Heraclitus. I'm an old hand at Civs 2 and 3 but pretty new to 4 and especially BtS. I'm finding the latter quite a change from Civ 3.

Thanks for the answer -- and thanks for keeping it simple!

Is all the bolding really necessary? I don't think the guy's retarded.

Does this help with great people? ?

Yes it is useful if you are going to have many specialists. It also gives your 5 largest more happiness. In many ways it is a complimentary civic, it rewards you for having specialist and makes it easy to have more.

Not directly that is why I didn't mention it. But it is a good idea to have it. Also It may help with the extra happines, if your cities are large enough.

I always bold. It makes it easier to get your point across. It saves the reader some time as well since he can see keywords quickly and skip the rest of the boring text.

Also, stop being the troll you usually are for a few minutes.

Yes it is, try looking up a few old threads or look some up. Please start new threads; it’s a refreshing feeling to be able to answer questions for a change.

Here is a useful site for people that are new to Civ 4.

War is a matter of vital importance to the state; a matter of life or death, the road either to survival or to ruin. Hence, it is imperative that it be studied thoroughly. -- Sun Tzu UPDATE: 4TH OCTOBER 2017 - The War Academy is seriously out of date, over the winter we intend to

Some of the strategy guides are out of date since they refer to different expansions/patches but the general idea in all of them is correct.

You know that to have a specialist in your city, you must move a citizen onto the specialist of your choice by selecting the + button.

Also be aware that certain buildings "unlock" the specialists. For example, building a library allows you to have two Scientist Specialists in that city.

I would have made one more but that would have been over the top.
