  • Unbelievable start location

I could've sworn I saw a similar thread within the last month, but couldn't find it, else I'd post this there. I started a game and this is the first thing I saw. Frankly, I think I'll be restarting - it's almost unfair to play with a start like this:

Nice cash cow, but you'll have a hard time providing enough food to keep all those tiles working. And forget about any Specialists.

Does that grassland tile have corn on it? I can't quite tell for sure. If so, then that start is very sweet. If not, then I agree with Willem, you'll have food problems. Too bad the furs aren't forested though.

I don't think this start is unfair, even if that is corn. Fur isn't the best resource, the silver mines will eat your excess food, and you're surrounded by tundra, so your settlement options for new cities will either be sub-par or high maintenance. Not that it isn't a nice start, but I don't think it's restart-the-game unfair.

I had a great, very similar staring position. With Willem.

Problem? It was a continents map, and I had an island by myself of MAYBE 20 squares all told, and every opponent had these giant-ass islands to rule that I gave up.

Can you post that save please?

The surrounding lands seem awful, as nice as that particular spot may be.

Oh well, in that case it is a really good start. I didn't notice the corn.

Fur often clumps like that, what's a bit unusual is you'll actually have enough food to work them all by early-mid game.

The main limitation to growth will be happyness.

This also looks like a start that calls for the semi-OCC gambit.

I had a great start site last night also. I Probably don't have the 4000BC save left, but I do have a relatively early pic available. I'll try to post tommorrow night when I get back home.

In short: City on plains/hill (settled 3950 cuz moved 1 tile), 1 ivory (plains), 1 rice (grassland), 8 water tiles, all else forested hills/grassland/plains.

Of those 8 water tiles, 3 are crabs/clams, the other 5 are ALL FRESH WATER.

It happens once in a while. I always play those "unbelievable" starts out. It's not as though I'd cheated to get there. Here's a funny one from last night: three tiles away from Elizabeth on a huge map.
