  • Game Speed

Hey, I'm new, but I've been encountering a problem where while I do the Earth scenario (18 Civs.) The time to load turns is about two minutes or more. It's made the game pretty slow, and I'd like to know if anyone else has encountered this problem or if there's something I should download to help me.

    Welcome to the forums Ziley.

You need a pretty beefy machine and graphics card to play huge maps with lots of civs.

Many of us compromise by playing standard or large maps.
And indeed there will be time To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". t s eliot

It's a shame then. I've got two enormous "platoons" (about 70+ units in both) ready to go to work on China and all its vassels, but I don't know if I should undertake the quest when it will take plenty of turns to make a significant change in scoring and if those turns take forever to come about. An update available on my CIV is Patch-13 (something like that,) but I don't know if that would help game-speed.

      Thanks for answering.

You can go into 'Options' and make some game changes as well as graphics changes. That will help with your screen lag. As far as between turns, you'll probably need a better graphics card.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

I recently made the change to 4 gigs of ram and it made a huge difference in the performance of several games I play. But then I am running 64bit Vista that can handle the ram.

Here is a link to a mod that's supposed to speed up the game a bunch. It's only for Warlords, not sure if they ever ported it to BtS or Vanilla (but I guess a motivated modder could port it over, since the source code is provided).

I think some of the optimizations in that made it into BtS (not the python checks/etc. but some of the other stuff).

The graphics were automatically switched to low-resolution once I first got the games since my computer couldn't handle the high resolution. I recently made a few more changes to make things go easier with graphics, so I think I'm done with that path.

                  I'll try it out, thanks.

If you don't have a computer that can handle high-resolution graphics then don't expect too much by playing on huge maps. You need a fairly powerful graphics card in order to play them well. Not monstrous, but better than what you have obviously. I'd stick with Standard or Large if you're bothered by the delay you're experiencing. Even Large might be a problem if the game is bumping you to low resolution.

The Earth scenerios are on rather large maps, so you need a graphics card with a lot of VRAM onboard.
