I'd want something to lessen the micromanagement needed for the trade routes. The one thing that I can remember I didn't like was all the clicking to set and check the transportation of goods in the late game - very tedious.
Speaking of marginal nations, the Swedes (and Finns of that time) did also form a colony which became New Sweden (unless the game starts after the colony was assimilated by the Dutch)

The ability to trade with the other nations and colonies, not just with my mother country. It always kind of bugged me when I was getting lousy prices for something that I didn't have the option of shopping around for a better price. Even if it was blackmarket trading it would still help to be able to go somewhere else.
