  • City location question

I want to put a city one spot south of the archer/ rice. If I do can I later put a city on the grassland next to the tiny river that reaches the whale or are the two cities too close?

I'm trying to work in the marble as part of a city.

For some reason Imageshack is only letting me do this as a thumb, sorry.

You can, it doesn't violate the 2-tiles-apart rule for cities.

    Will be cramped, but possible.

Here's a better pic. I now have a city south of the rice and am looking for opinions on other city sites. Closer to optics I'm going to want that whale, right?

        What about other sites? Suggestions...?

First city where your archer is
Second on the plains next to the crab (3 south-west of first city)
Third 1 tile north of the pigs
After that, I can't see the map. Maybe one city south of Carthage too?

another suggestion: don't build straight roads, it is better to build them using a diagonal pattern
don't work an unimproved tile in Carthage (forest with road). Better rushbuild the settler with slaves.
On this map I would go for Artemision - Great Lighthouse - Colossus : all your cities are coastal and you have marble (not copper though as far as I can tell)

You could consider to put the city where the archer is now. This location has only 1 desert and 1 mountain as crap tiles, while the other has 4 deserts and 1 mountain. True, it overlaps with your capital, however this will become an issue only after your capital is "full" which is quite a bit in the future. And even then, when you concede the overlapping tiles to your capital, you have only four unworkable tiles, while the other has five, that can't be worked ever - not now and not later.

Edit: xpost, but you see its a good point

So you forgot about the whale...

A weird thing about your screenshot is that the score of the opponents doesn't appear with your score on the right-hand lower corner ?

One more city four tiles south of the rice to grab the whale, then take care of the barbs.

Can't use the whale without Optics, I'll build that city later. Regarding the opponents score, just click on YOUR name, they'll vanish. Click again, they're back.

Hey! Did I just teach somebody a couple of things about Civ IV?

The barbs serve a purpose as place holders. I have an island so an AI would have to show in force to take the barbs. Meanwhile the barbs will polish my troops up. They seem pretty quite however.

                          hmmm, crappy map! :-)

I would just place cities anywhere you like, even when the whale is outside the cross. since it is only available from optics doesn't make the tile interesting from the beginning. leave it outside the cross, build up some culture and send a whale boat as soon as optics is available AND as soon as your culture covers the whale....

                          Mc

I did that once accidently and it took a while to figure out what I did, and how to get the display back.
