  • 'March' promotion and Destroyers...?

    Hello,

Does anyone know the answers to the following?

    1) The March promotion makes it possible to heal while moving. But who is being healed and who is allowed to move?

If unit X in a stack has the March promotion, does it heal the other units in the stack while the stack is moving (usually a unit has to be immobile to be eligible for healing)? Or does it only heal itself when its moving?

2 Can I edit the Civilopedia somehow (if yes, please tell me where) to add to the popup-descriptions for Destoyers, a line that says "Can detect submarines 2 tiles in every direction"?

Because I always forget how far it can see and I position them wrongly.

It will only heal itself while on the move.

You would edit the file in the Text directory that refers to units... don't recall exactly what the name is. assets\xml\textinfos\unitwhatever.xml
Open in notepad, do a Find for 'destroyer', and it will come up at some point.

A unit normally only heals when it doesn't move. The Medic promotion increases the amount a unit heals when the Medic promotion is in the same square with the healing unit, but the wounded unit must qualify for healing, which means it cannot move. That does mean you can move a Medic into a square containing a stationary injured unit and it will get the benefit of the higher rate healing. March just allows a unit to qualify for healing while it is moving, so moving it along with a Medic will allow it to both heal and heal faster.

FYI, units carried by a transport will heal while the transport is moving, providing the passengers don't embark or disembark during the turn. It's one reason I like Medic promotions on transport ships.

I can see how a unit would heal while resting on a ship, but are you positive that injured ground units will heal while moving with a march medic?

No, but if the March unit moves onto a square effected by a medic, it will get the extra healing of the medic.

So, a combat III/March unit moving next to a Medic II unit would get the fast heal while marching.

And Combat III/March is not THAT difficult to obtain with aggressive leaders...

You're misunderstanding. Only the units with March can heal while moving, but the Medic gives his bonus to any unit in the same square that can heal. It doesn't matter whether the Medic moves or not. Say you have two units, one with March and one with Medic. The March unit is damaged, and you keep moving them together. The unit with March will heal every turn even though it moves, and as long as it's in the same square as a Medic it will get the Medic bonus to its healing rate.

here is an article about unit healing. that article is from 2006, but the thread that it links to has some updated BtS information in it, including Woodsman 3 stuff. disclaimer: it's on that-other-website.

about transports and healing ... Medic ships can heal land units, as mentioned above. but there's a land/sea boundary, and units can only heal one side of that boundary. a ship in a city (or BtS fort) is considered "on land" that turn, and even if it has Medic 2 or 3 it won't heal ships that are on adjacent coast tiles at the higher rate; it will heal all types of units that are in the city/fort with it and on adjacent land tiles.

in games where i won't be warring much early on so i don't need an early military instructor, i use my first warlord (often from privateers yarrrrrrrrr) to make a Medic 3 unit. i keep that unit weak, generally a chariot who got some exp from barbs, and then i don't upgrade him until gunships come around (if the game lasts that long). i don't give him March, i give him Morale. he's not allowed to fight, imo he's more valuable as a hospital to risk that way, so he doesn't need to heal his own injuries so March would be a waste. keeping him weak, even tho upgrading would be free, hopefully ensures that he won't be the strongest defender if my stack gets attacked. Morale lets him stay on a tile with stronger units so he stays out of danger - he can heal one SoD and then catch up to other guys the next turn, or he can pillage to harass the bad guys and still move to my fighting troops. my whole army heal much faster, so wars go quicker. and it qualifies me for HE/WP quicker - i'm not usually a warmonger (see: earning first GG from privateers) but i do like to have those national wonders, i'm weird. besides, medic gunships are spiffy. they move so fast, and you can't put medic on freshly made gunships, they have to be upgraded from old mounted units. i've even pillaged my own oil to go backwards in time and make cavs to upgrade. did i mention i'm weird?
