I'm a little confused with how the odds are calculated with retreat.

The odds shown never match up to the flat out withdrawal chance, coming up less.

If a Cossack has a 30% withdrawal chance, is that 30% of some other figure (victory/defeat?). I know the maths are in there somewhere I just don't know where.

This has been bugging me for ages but I always forget to ask

It's 30% of your chance to lose.

So, if you have a 57% chance to win, then your chance to retreat is (30% of 100-57) 12.9%.

(Another way to look at it is that your chance not to die is 57% + 12.9% = 70%.)

This basically means that flanking and things like combat and city raider are contradictory promotions. The stronger the unit is, or the more combat boost the unit has, the less flanking is useful.

Flanking is great IMO if you promote straight up the flanking line, for mounted units that you want to be able to try and get flank damage against siege units. They won't kill anything, but they'll smack the stack of units and ding a bunch of the catapults or cannon or whatever.

The withdrawl promotions are great to have on a few units to go along with your cannons, so that after your first cannon strike does collateral damage to the rest of the units there, your cavalry takes the relatively undamaged lead unit out (or at least weakens it), and has a reasonable (~50%) chance of survival - and also thus increases future cannons' survival rate.

Not kill anything? Flank attacks DO KILL. Yes I've been a fan of flank promoted mounted units since the new flanking rules. Most units ive killed with 1 attack from 1 helo was 5 units killed. Man I loved that. took some bombers to soften them up first, but the helo killed 5 units with 1 attack!!
