  • How do you make a specialist?

I can't figure out how to turn a citizen into a specialist. I assumed it was in the city window but can't find a button that does it.

This leads to my second question: when the folks get unhappy do I create a specialist or take someone off a tile (as we used to do in Civ 3) -- and how do I do that?

I'm a fairly old hand at Civ 3 but 4 seems so much more complex to me.

I also discovered yesterday that the Celts' Gallic Warrior ain't what he used to be!

You need to have the right technologies, buildings, and/or civics chosen to make a specialist. (for example, if you have a library, you can make 2 scientists. A temple can make a priest. And so on)

But, if you have those, in the city screen off to the right, there is a bunch of specialists. You click on the + number to increase them. This will take them off a tile.

Unhappy people do not work tiles, either, but they are removed automatically. There is a button in the city screen to prevent growth, or you can manually adjust your cities to keep them from growing and making unhappy citizens.

However, there is no entertainer specialist in Civ IV to make people happy. You need religion, resources, or buildings to accomplish that. In return, the specialists we DO get are much more usefull and make points towards a Great Specialist.

I don't appear to have a screenshot in my upload section that I can share. I'll see if I can't find one to edit and highlight the area for you.

The only way to make people happy instantly is to use the Culture slider, which becomes active with Drama. That is the equivalent of the Entertainer specialists.

Usually your first specialist comes from either a Temple (priest) or Library (scientist). Each building tells you how many specialists it allows.

If you look to the bottom of the specialist list, and you have angry people, you'll see a red person or two. Those are 'angry' people. They just don't work - there's no penalty to having them (except if you have BtS, you do have some risk of negative events happening) except they eat 2 food each. The rest of the city works fine, just these unhappy people camp out in front of city hall or something

Strictly speaking it is the equivalent of both, as you don't have any other way of doing it But yes, it's global and can't be done city to city.

Here, I found an old city screen on a google image search.

To the right is the specialists with the + sign next to the ones this city is capable of building. Notice it cannot build any merchants.

            Below is the unhappy peoples.

With certain buildings, you will see that it allows the creation of a certain type and number of specialists. So you can't make a specialist right away when you start a city.

A temple for example allows you to turn one citizen into a priest. Note that this adds up for the different religions, so if you have three religions in a city, and build temples for all three of them, that not only gives you the extra happiness, but it also lets you turn three citizens into priests. Of course, in order to build a temple you need priesthood, plus you need to have the given religion in the city as well.

There is more complexity in Civ 4 compared to the previous game, but it is also very direct. Some of the old things like corruption have been replaced by the city maintenance costs for example.

So, think about it this way, and it may make a little more sense...

You need to know technologies in order to build some buildings. In addition, before you can build religious structures, you need to have the associated religion in that city. This makes the selection of what technology advancements you research more important since it will be tied into how you build your civilization.

With Beyond the Sword, units look different based on which Civilization you are looking at. This helps the "feel" of the game since warriors from different civilizations will tend to look different. Unique units and buildings also add to this.
