  • Culture Wars AAR

    Settings:

    Maptype: Terra,
    Size: Large,
    Speed: Epic,
    Leader: Gilgamesh of Sumeria
    Diff. Level:Monarch,
Optionals: Aggressive AI, No tech brokering.
    Starting techs: Wheel, Agriculture.

Crazy start. More seafood than what is considered healthy! First tech researched is obviously Fishing. Also got some fur in first city radius and with a wee bit of exploring I've found marble to my south. Having explored a bit I realize my start was overrated. It seems I'm stuck in a cold and inhospitable place in the world... Not any good city sites immediately available.

First build, new warrior, don't need a worker anytime soon since I'm not farming or mining until I have a few boats sailing and with Aggressive AI I'm playing it over-safe. Also, I want to be able to do some fogbusting.

I'm not 100% sure of what route I'm taking for this game, but culture will be a definitive important aspect of it. Let me think a bit while I explore...

Hmmm... I'm a bit rusty with the whole picture adding thing in new posts... how did I do this again...

oops. not AAR. just AR. anyway, here's the pic.

might be a bit hard to see, 3 fish and 2 crabs in the sea. wow.

the rest is not so impressive. The purpose of this game is to
    A. Function as a "How to"-guide for your average newb who could use some directions. A few explanations of choices and such.
    and
    B. Show (or rather experiment with) how culture is a force to be reckoned with.
    C. I'll also try a few untraditional strategies on certain cities to show how you can develop cities in different ways.

I hope you find it interesting.

ps. the marble is just south of the plains on the bottom of the pic.

Ouch. Not far to my west is Pericles. So my Creative will be balanced out with his. I will clearly not culture dominate him easily. The land between us is mostly glacier and tundra, worthless. I'll have to consider making an army and running him over, he probably has way better land to his west.

Fishing finished, going for Mining. I want to be able to chop as many of those hills ASAP. that will speed up production of workers from chopping and the mines will help me with more production. Done with the warrior, going for a fishing boat.

Oh. Islam was just founded. Forgot to tell you about another Optional choice I checked; Choose Religion when you invent them. I'm not focusing on Religions since on Monarch I'm not likely to get any of the early ones (Poly, Meditation). I suspect that was Meditation.

I may decide to change my original plan to use my cultural trait as an advantage and instead try to use Spying to the max. Very soon I'll set off 10% to Espionage.

      After Mining, BW.
Further west from Alexander, no exceptional land in between, I meet Ramesses, recent founder of Confucianism. And from somewhere south of me, the Byzantines show up with an Archer.

I've built a work boat, put it on a fish and now I'm building another one. After covering all the 3 Fishes with boats, I now feel I can make a worker in an acceptable number of turns. I adopt Slavery with BW and then get Hunting fast, my worker wants to hook up those Furs eventually, and after that Archery. My Aggressive AI neighbours cant be trusted.

Whee first "Fun with Togugawa" and now this. When I get back to my playing comp I'm going to start a "Scourge of the Seas" with Ragnar.

Anyways, this will be much appreciated and especially you specializing cities will be fun to see. I assume Uruk will be a Great People factory with that kind of seafood abundance.

I would think it will be very hard for you to win a cultural victory with a starting position like that, seeing that you won't be able to get any kind of proper commerce going and you'll have to rely heavily on the culture from wonders and religious buildings to pump it up.

Anyways, looks like a brutal start (seeing those god-awful surroundings) which should make it a good read. Looking forward to your updates.

Aye aye Fleme. It is quite horrid. Pericles has boxed me in to 3 cities in that hellhole so now I have to find some other way of breaking out. Outculturing him seems impossible atm so I might decide to build a few colonies by galley and outculturing a less articulate neighbour. I suspect already that the end of this game will be interesting though excruciating...

(ps. any reference to Alexander is supposed to be Pericles)

My current development is not very impressive. I have found Iron near my second city, so at least I have that. I have settled a third city on the ice, 2 deer and a crab should balance out some of it allowing it to focus on production of military hardware. Now I'm all out of land. However, the continent veers south and so I will attempt to settle a few there by galley as mentioned. Justinian lives over that way and maybe I'll be able to make my colony dominate that area...

          screen to come.

Houston, we have a problem. I'm running this on another machine than my home system and it keeps crashing... I've been using v.3.01 I believe (forgot to patch) but I'm gonna upgrade now, but will the save be compatible?

Have you got saves you can attach?

              Looks like an interesting start.
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

3 cities you say? well sir thats all you need to win...

A 4th citie however helps a ton allowing cathedrals.

Fyi, I just played a culture victory just before Tokugawa. The key is religion, I founded the 3 monothiestics and spread Judaism like it was goin outta style. Built the AP and was able to control everyone around me enough to never actually fight a war on my own soil. Founded only four cities and captured 2 more late game just for kicks (and more seafood for sid's sushi)

very interesting Hauptman, but I suspect the AR would have to be named Holy Wars

I don't know if I have a snowballs chance on the sun in this game, but I've decided to tough it out and see if I can use a few tricks to my favour.

I saved the start on my flash drive, I'll give it a whirl and see what I come up with tonight... That kind of fish start makes me drool. I can do so much with that.

This a large map? maybe you dont need 4 temples for a cathedral on large.

Hello again, my impatience has finally gotten the better of me and I'm gonna risk playing even though it might keep crashing. extremefrequent saves is key word.

Looking at my pathetic lands with my 3 natural expansion sites, I've decided to go overseas for some colonizing. I am going to do what I can to seize the coast south of me and Pericles and move inland as far as I can, attempting to capture the barb cities. That should give me the size I need to get going. It will however play havoc and hell on my "economy". By doing this I should be pinching Pericles between my 2 empire parts and I just might wipe him out later.

I'm building a lot of archers and I'm hooking up Iron, I'm gonna need troops to defend myself from Pericles (whom I just cancelled OB with on the behest of Peter who shares my religion and is in a leading position). I'm also gonna need a lot of tougher units to take those barb cities before someone else does... The arms race is on!

Peter is way ahead of the rest of us, not sure how, but I suspect he built the Oracle. Competition is harsh on Monarch. I'm thinking about building the Great Lighthouse, but more settlers will probably be more valuable ATM. So it will have to wait. More updates in the making!

another crash. does anyone know why the game would crash and burn so badly? not CTD, total lockup. I suspect the graphics card is running into some kind of ugliness...

                              Radeon X800 SE....

(gonna try update the 2 yearold drivers. but it's a dell and I hear that dellmachines have their own drivers... is that correct?)
