  • Something odd

In my blockage game I like the map so I made a save yr 4000BC, by loading the auto save from that year and then saving it again. Then after that task I hit 'regenerate map' , just to see what I'd get before sacking out. Got a map, was ok...then shut off and went about my biz. So I wake up this morning and decide to try that blockage map and do better...but then change my mind and decide to go back to the original blockage. Before doing that, I hit 'regenerate map'...and here's the odd thing...the regenerated map looks dead on like the one I got the night before.

Is it possible? Or just appearance? I thought these things were random...

    Maybe I'm still sleeping?

This is actually happening. It would mean that either I'm missing some basic fact as to the meaning of 'regenerate map', or that the prior map determines everything about the map that comes after.

Amazingly odd it seems to me.

I think you just hit the 'load save' button by mistake.

Did you start this as a custom game with the option "New random seed on reload" checked? If not, then the random seed was saved along with the 4000 BC file, which would mean you'll get the exact same results from regenerating the map.

So a random map is random in the same way? Okay I guess.

The computer generates random numbers by using a "seed" that determines a sequence of numbers that will be computed next. This seed makes the random numbers "marked cards" of results. An interesting experiment would be to try the regeneration after going pass a goody hut.
I'm not sure if it will work, but it would make the regenerated map different, as the "next card" that makes the regenerated map the same would be used up.

Mr "Sceptic"? What exactly are you implying?

This is a long standing phenomena.

Back in civ vanilla, in multiplayer, there was a problem with people hosting games on random maps, yet the maps his RNG would generate would consistently redraw the same map if he didnt log out or something like that.

Gave an unfair advantage as you could imagine, and caused quite a stir. So what i figure is, the rng has already rerolled the regenerate map even before you ever hit the button.

BTW yes I have experienced this same issue, on regenerated maps off a 4000bc save, well before the save was immediatly replaced that is.

Besides causing me to doubt reality, making me think that we are all plugged in to a great machine civ to produce electricity and this game we love is just another method of control and that I am THE ONE and you guys are all agents of the system, I've come to accept that random isn't quite.

We ALL have problems with that at various points.

That reality thing is highly overrated if you ask me. It is SO subjective! Of course, "the establishment" tries to tell us it isn't so (subjective).
Well, maybe in physics and chemistry at the molecular level or above ... but not below it.

Aside from you being the ONE, that's not too far off.
