  • Vile Barbarians, Destroyers and Usurpers of All That is Good and Fair in This World

...are freakin eating my lunch! All I have is warriors to face them and my sci is down to 30% because I went a city too far to make an inland passage for sea vessels using a couple of lakes, very cool. However if they get axmen before I get archers, well it won't be good for civilization.

24 turns to archery unless I can increase sci. I'm building the Great Lighthouse, but I just started. Meanwhile most of my warriors have the anti archer upgrade and are surviving. More than I can say for some of my farms and mines, there is no safe place, no quiet backwater where I can work the land or sequester the women, who seem to not mind the barbarian incursions so much any more, odd that.

I should say that I'm playing at marathon. I've now got archery and have started on Bronze working At 30% only 54 turns.

Somebody else built the Lighthouse. The payout was $480 so my sci is back up to 80% and bronze will be in 20 turns...but its costing me 10 per turn.

        What was the question again?

It is a question of survival. I have bronze, but had to make another city to get the ****ing copper, further aggrivating both my financial disaster and my nervous t t t tic. I'm now building my first axman.

There are 3 barb cities in a triangle around me and I'd almost rather have them than a NY style pizza from my favorite pizzaria back east. Almost.

Friendly advice: Screw money, found that bronze city, get some vet axes and go bonk some heads. Fund your research with the capturing income, it's a lot! Beeline the economical route (currency) while you're on the roll. Later fund your empire with cottages, trade routes and markets.

Those last barb archers got upgraded, some idiot must have hit them and failed. (No, not me) I used up 2 axmen wearing them down and only took the place cuz I brought 3 warriors with me for yucks, three that had the anti archer upgrade. So, that was the second barb city, burned it, the first I kept. SR, you are right. Earned maybe $235 between the two of them. However of the 4 axmen used only one yet draws breath, or electrons or whatever.

At 0% sci I'm still losing 3 gold per turn but I just took the last barb city, the tough one, the one on a hill. Killing those 3 archers cost me 3 axmen. The 4th, the survivor of the earlier debacle took the place. Grim. To show for my efforts I have gained 2 cities, one axman lives and a national debt that would make the US's look like a bill for dinner out. By spending 8 gold per turn I've ramped my sci up to 10% and alphabet will be in 130 turns from now, 115 turns after my money runs out. Can't wait. Still, revenge is sweet and civilization saved. Barbarian blood fertilizes the soil of a civ 9 cities strong with the coolest inland waterway it has been my pleasure to sail upon, which is about all I can afford to do.

                    I'd love to, but

                    1) I haven't a clue how

                    and

                    2) I'm on the internet on a different comp than the one I'm playing on.

                    Sorry.

Perhaps disband some old units, like warriors without promotions or with only one (EDIT: If the number of units is the reason for the negative bilance...). It's not efficient to upgrade these anyway, building new is usually cheaper. Get to 0% with a zero or slightly positive bilance, and start consolidating. Halt expansion and build cottages and other tile improvements. And rack your pop up to the maximum, then begin using the whip (if you don't already).

Congrats for your waterway, I love those too.

When I realized the possibilties to make a transit practicly through the middle of a large continent, well I couldn't not. I threw out settlers with great abandon to get the spots before civs closer got them. Three cities were needed and none were close to my cap. So, it's tough but very fun. Spreading out in a straight line across an unsettled continent invited barbs and I got em in spades.

The waterway is made and the barbs dead, very cool.

SR, that's a good plan! If I had pottery it would help alot.Right now I have 4 efforts to get the $ under control. The first is growth, without the barbs I can finally use my workers, and the lakes upon which I sail with such joy are irrigating lots of farms. The second is lighthouses. I'm going to pull dough from the sea. The last two are wonders I'll never build but am building. Though I don't have currency wonders still pay pretty well when somebody else builds em first.

Yup, just pulled in 149 smackers for not building the Temp O Artimus.

Librarys too, building those in 3 major cities.

Bumped up my sci to 20%, alphabet in 60, -13 per turn. Going to disband some warriors as per your suggestion.

Alphabet in 4 turns. You never know what events are going to conspire to save you. I got a prophet and built the Jewish holy building which made it possible to run at 30% for a few, 20 now. Also I found a goody hut on an island and got $99.

If you don't have archery or bronze, then what are you doing worrying about a canal city? And are you aware of the ability of fortresses?
