You should've capitalized on Organized Religion and pumped out Missionaries to convert as many heathens to your faith as possible. Good for both relations and cash.

Playing the religious game requires a very particular strategy. I find that you have to co-ordinate quite a few things if you are to use it effectively which, amongst other things

a) Will require you to get trade routes to maximise “natural” spread to aid diplomacy
b) Using religious civics
c) Generating Prophets – if done using Priests this can slow your expansion but the Wonders are often not the most sought after apart from the Oracle. With strategic resources this is less of a problem.

Ever have a religion totally poop out on you? I feel like the six sided star is becoming a target on my back! Hmm,alot like Israel is today.

There are ways to do something with this. I got Hinduism in my last game and thought, "Great, this will get me a religious partner or two!" Well, Isabella had Buddhism and had spread out her religion everywhere. I was busy fending off barbarians and such and didn't get out any missionaries. We were both on one side of an oddly shaped Pangea and there was a big expanse of desert and ugly terrain between us and the rest of the Civs. Her missionaries, braving the roaming barbs, must have gotten into their trade network and one by one all other nations were Buddhist. Yikes!

I finally got some trade connection and a couple of fringe towns in their empires got Hinduism through those trade routes, but not many. After getting my act together, I spread Hinduism (with escorted missionaries!)(I have never had to escort missionaries before!) into at least one city in every Civ.

I owned the Apostolic Palace, so, I started triggering Apostolic Victory elections as the chance came up. I had out grown everybody into the great empty expanse, mostly by taking barbarian cities and over stretching my economy for a while. Therefore, I had plenty of Hindu votes, but the new rules will not let you elect yourself a victory. Finally, Hatshepsut, who had been voluntary vassal to two different AIs so far, breaks free once again and offers to vassal to me. "Great!" I think, "I was just getting ready to hit Isabella and take Madrid and get all those Buddhist cities paying money to me. Now I will have a partner!"

The Apostolic Victory election popped up. I set it off, and Hatshepsut voted with me. Suddenly, I have won!

I was facing the Buddhist power block just as you describe. I could see them steadily losing favor with me even though I gave what gifts and demands I could. My best scheme was to invade Isabella, hope that not too many of her friends joined her, take Madrid, and convert to Buddhism, giving up my hard earned Apostolic Palace bonuses. I was not giving myself good odds at getting away with any of that. It looked really bad.

However.....

There is always something good to make out of a bad Civ situation, even if you don't realize what it is until it happens. In this case, I got my earliest Victory ever. I love it. I would love it more if I had planned it, but that is just a picky detail.

Pretty sure the rule is: Every Civ must be a voting member of the Apostolic Palace to have the Apostolic Victory option appear. In other words, every Civ must have at least one city with the Apostolic religion in it. Then you can have a vote to win.

I keep running into this, I always go for the Palace and always get annoyed when the first vote comes up and I haven't yet spread my religion other continents/islands.

Edit: Or did you mean at least one person other than yourself must vote for you to become Resident? That one hasn't come up for me yet.
