Technically what you're doing is illegal (and is pirating). Read the fine print of your license for Civ (it's in the back of the manual). You are allowed to install on one machine only. So, what you should be doing is buying a second copy of the game to use on that second machine. Whether it's Steam or a store-bought CD is up to you.

Many years ago in the Civ I era, I had a boss that played the game at work. When he got stuck he would have us help him.

He got fired not too long after.

          Go figure.

Is it even possible to download the game via Steam without paying for it? My only experience has been through preorders, where I paid for them in advance, so I can't really say. All normal Valve games can be activated through Steam even though you have a store-purchased copy, but Civ isn't a Valve game; they're just handling the digital distribution.

Physical distribution is going to die in the @$$ due to this type of backward thinking trollop. I would of just originally purchased via steam (that way I could play it on 10 different computers without hassle).
              1. Pay half as much for the game.
              2. Don't need to worry about media degrading (cd scratches)
              3. Don't have to transport it around

                4. Is just as illegal to play on more than one machine.

Actually, generally they don't mind if you use it on multiple machines so long as you don't have it in use on multiple machines at once. Some jurisdictions have this required by law, iiuc. I can't speak towards a specific EULA, but I generally wouldn't consider an EULA to have any particular value from a legal sense anyhow.
<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

REMOVED: THIS IS AGAINST SITE POLICY. Generally, it is considered acceptable to install a product on multiple computers as long as it is not being used on multiple computers at the same time. So if you install at home and on your work machine, as long as people are not playing it on your work machine while you are playing at home, there really shouldn't be a problem.
