  • What XML-editor to use ?

Hey you modders out there - just wondering: What program(s) do you prefer when editing XML-files ?

Notepad works just fine for me.

I like Vim, but that's because I know my way around the old Unix vi editor fairly well. Unfortunately, while vi provides some neat tricks, it also has about the steepest learning curve of any editor ever invented - or at least any that has ever attracted a significant number of users. Vim, operating in GUI mode, provides access both to modern GUI-based editing and to my old vi tricks. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't already comfortable with vi.

          VIM???

Whats next dude? Eight Megs And Constantly Swapping?

Chalk me into the good old plain vi category. Though since I never code on windoze I'm not actually sure if there's a simple vi version available.

Maybe vim is the only option. Anyhow props to another old unix hand.

Vim offers some other nice things besides GUI support, such as multiple levels of undo and a diff mode (for comparing different versions of a file). It's hard for me to imagine why anyone would want to make a deliberate effort to use plain old vi instead of Vim, except maybe if they're afraid of getting hooked. Then again, considering how many different platforms Vim runs on, I'm not sure how much reason there is to be afraid of getting hooked either.

In my case it's mostly a combination of a guarantee that no matter where I am the feature-set I expect will be there and just plain old cantankerous orneriness of the "Get off my lawn you damn kids!" sort.

But I do grant that vim is pretty much everywhere these days, and I'll further grant that almost every time I invoke vi I'm actually invoking vim and just not using the advanced features that I don't want to get addicted to.

              Maybe I am just a cantankerous old fart. . . ..

Wow -- this one looks great. Much better than Textpad, which is what I'd been using....thanks for the tip.

Altova is the XML editor Firaxis used (read the start of each file!) and has a free home version if you can find it (not sure if it's for download from them any more). I like it well enough, it's more powerful for xml than a regular text editor, although the free version isn't as snazzy as the paid version

Excel (especially 2007) also has some good abilities in reading XML files, particularly if you're making multiple changes.

Notepad++ for any sort of plain text editing.
