few of the civics are realistic at all so thats hardly a compelling reason to change it. civics exist for gameplay and balance to a much, much larger extent than they exist for realism.

I feel research bonus is more realistic than gold. Innovation doesn't get triggered by more money, but by motivation, needs and not to speak of the possibility and acceptance of different ideas. A civic like representation is meant to reflect that the different opinions from the people is heard and considered. And a society that accepts different opinion is also more flexible to adept new ideas e.g. more research.

You are forgeting that you may not be runing free speech.

Anyway different opinions would lead to innovations in a broader field than academia, it also would add cultural value and allow more efficent buisness models to be implimented.

I agree. But this would be a chnage that brings more realism, that would not affect gameplay aversly and is ridiculusly easy to impliment! Most people would barley notice it... and those who did notice would most likley find it to add value.

I guarantee you that Firaxis isn't going to change this without a very compelling reason. I noticed that you posted some other suggestions for changes, too. Why not combine them all into your own mod? Go ahead and do it yourself, and post it for people to download? If it's a really great mod, Firaxis will hear about it and may consider implementing your changes in a future patch and/or iteration of Civ.

I strongly doubt it (again, for the reasons explained above, and also because at this late stage in the game, there will be a tremendous resistance to changing values that have now been written in stone for over two years. I also suspect that Firaxis ran many, many variations of civic benefits when they were first writing the "rules" of the game back in '04-'05 for the first release of "vanilla" Civ IV, and the ones you now suggest may have already been considered and rejected....) Anyway, this is really the best chance you have of getting your ideas implemented.

If nothing else, you will at least have the satisfaction of playing with your own changes which you seem to feel will add something to the game.

If it's not broke, don't fix it. You never know what balance may be affected by a change ... so unless there's a good gameplay reason, no reason to do it IMO.

Messing with gold vs beakers is a BAD idea - there is a reason that banks are better than universities. It's because gold is not directly equivalent to beakers (due to preferences of players). Messing with that balance is very dangerous.

Seconded. It makes the game harder to understand and less fun

I disagree with Heraclitus' sugestion, under current rules just lower your science slider thereby increasing your gold per turn when you want more gold.

However, I also strongly disagree with the striking his sugestion from the record. I may disagree with Heraclitus but will fight to the death in support of his right to say it.

Now that's bad manners if I ever saw it... Guy's clearly offering a suggestion in good faith; however much you may disagree, why be disrespectful?
