  • Aussies review BtS

Under the motto better late than never, Australian gaming site PALGN has posted its review of Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword. Editor Luke Mitchell is impressed by the many new features so much so that this expansion could be considered as a sequel.

He provides explanations on some of the major new features in this expansion, namely espionage, corporations and random events. Then he describes the AI improvements:

The AI in Beyond the Sword has also been significantly tweaked, and is much more difficult than previously. The gameplay decisions made by the AI now make more sense and provide you with the feeling that they are really thinking through their strategies, which means that the entire competitive experience has been refined. It’s quite shocking when a war is waged on you, and defending against it now is much tougher, as the AI really seems like it wants to demolish your cities.

Mitchell also discusses advanced starts, mods, graphics and sound. While mostly positive, he does also offer some criticism as well:

There are some balancing issues with the corporation and espionage elements of the games, where sometimes they are too powerful for their own good, or in some cases, nowhere near as effective as they should be. There are once again also some performance issues with the game once it gets towards its final stages; with so much going on it’s inevitable, but it does detract from the overall game somewhat when for the most part it is such a smooth ride.

All in all PALGN gives Beyond the Sword a high grade: 9.0, with only the graphics and sound elements getting lower ratings: 8.5 and 7.5 respectively. Read the full review on PALGN.
