    Privateers here share one thing in common with their earlier version in Civ III, too. Just as you can attack another civ without going to war, they can attack your privateers without going to war. EVERYONE attacks privateers on sight, in my experience. They will not ignore their presence unless they aren't capable of opposing them.
    Age and treachery will defeat youth and skill every time.

      Certainly, as they are a threat... And I'd assume they also get GG points from it.

        I certainly think privateers are right. They can pick off caravels and galleons but the AI's will swarm them, particularly if damaged.

        It is possible to hide in an another civ's port city and pick off their ships but sooner or later you have to make a run for home and risk being swatted on the open ocean.

        If you can afford the rather expensive cost getting privateers up to 10XP does allow upgrade to combat III destroyers with sentry.

        All in all fun and not unbalanced.
        Never give an AI an even break.
