start point distribution in MP in BtS

Is the starting point distribution in BtS random?

I play a lot of multiplayer games with a friend of mine. We always have 5 KIs and us 2 humans.

Before BtS, we always started with the maximum distance possible between us. Since BtS, we always start next to each other, except for one or two games.

Was this changed on purpose? And is it now random or is it now made in a way, that non-KI players have a higher chance to start next to each other?

I think it is (theoretically) random, though it's not perfect. I assume KI = german for AI (artificial intelligence).

You could look at the code in python to be sure - map scripts are all python.
