            Though, I must say, sometimes, when I build it very early, it barely spans a city or two worth of borders... Not that "Great".

              i had it on one single tile. basically keeping out the barbarian hordes from my peninsula by placing one big brick on a 1-tile wide strip of land. it truly was Great.

                You need to start building it as soon as possible since the other civs like that wonder too. Beeline for Masonry, get your first city up and running then have a Worker build a Mine or two around your capital. I don't even bother with it anymore unless I have a source of Stone nearby. Even then I can still get beat out by an Industrious civ who also has a source of Stone.
